The FIFA World Cup 2022 will take place in November and this year it is set to look very different as the tournament takes place in winter and in the middle of the football season for the first time ever. Here’s all you need to know.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 kicks off on November 20 but this year’s tournament is set to look very different for a number of reasons.

For the first time ever the tournament is being held in a country in the Middle East and is being played outside what is the traditional summer window, in what is the Northern Hemisphere winter.

Even before a ball has been kicked, the tournament has already become one of the most controversial in the history of the World Cup, being condemned by human rights organizations and pundits alike.

What are the 2022 World Cup dates?

The opening match of the 2022 World Cup will see hosts Qatar take on Ecuador in Group A.

England’s first game takes place on day 2 of the tournament when they face Group B rivals Iran in what is an 8pm kick off for football fans in Thailand.

During the group stages of the tournament, which lasts for 12 days, four games per day take place.

The round of 16 then takes place from December 3, with the winners and runners up of each group playing against each other.

The quarter finals then begin on December 9, 10 and 11 (Thai time) before the semi finals are due to be held on December 14 and December 15 (Thai time).

The third place play off will then take place on December 17 ahead of the final on December 18.

In total the tournament will last for four weeks from mid November to the week before Christmas.

Who are the favorites?

A total of 32 teams have qualified for the 2022 World Cup, which are split into eight groups of four teams.

The teams taking part in the Qatar World Cup are:

Group A: Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal, Netherlands
Group B: England, Iran, USA, Wales
Group C: Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland
Group D: France, Australia, Denmark, Tunisia
Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan
Group F: Belgium, Canada, Morocco, Croatia
Group G: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon
Group H: Portugal, Ghana, Uruguay, South Korea

While Brazil may not have won the World Cup since 2002, many pundits make the five-time winners favorites in Qatar.

Holders France are second favorites and well fancied by many to mount a serious challenge for the ultimate prize. However, Les Blues are dealing with significant injuries. N’golo Kante (hamstring) and Raphael Varane (ankle) will both miss France’s title defence.

The recent form of Argentina has seen them become third favorites for this year’s tournament.

And there could be a fairy tale ending for Lionel Messi, who will be leading Argentina in what will be his final World Cup and he hopes to land the one major honor that has so far eluded him in his quite remarkable career.

Fourth favorites are England, who after reaching the semi finals in 2018 and the final on home soil of Euro 2020, will be aiming to bring the 56 year wait for international success to a close.

Behind England are 2010 winners Spain, who have an exciting young squad at their disposal. And rule out Germany at your peril, who despite being sixth favorites are still in with a chance of winning this year’s tournament.

AL WAKRAH, QATAR – 2022: Aerial view of Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.

Why is this World Cup being held in November?

The 2022 Qatar World Cup will mark the first time the tournament has been played outside the traditional summer window.

The tournament will start in November because of Qatar’s intense summer heat, which would simply be too hot for players to play in.

During the height of summer, temperatures in Qatar can reach upwards of 40 degrees Celsius.

While the weather won’t be quite as hot in November and December, temperatures may still reach 30 degrees.

Although this tournament is the first World Cup to take place in the winter, it is unlikely to be the last. Given that FIFA is eager for the tournament to be used to promote the game around the world, expect other Middle Eastern countries to host the tournament in the future.

Why is the tournament controversial?

The decision to host the tournament in Qatar has been met with criticism for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the fact that players are having to play in a country that is so, the disruption to the domestic leagues in Europe and the lack of infrastructure in Qatar that has raised questions about whether the country is capable of hosting a tournament the size of the World Cup.

However, the main reason why the tournament is controversial is to do with Qatar’s questionable stance on human rights.

Homosexuality remains illegal in the country and is punishable by up to seven years in jail. Another key issue concerns migrant workers, with human rights organizations alleging that Qatar has a long history of abuse of its migrant residents.

How to watch the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Thailand

While there are some really early/late games (2am), the good news for football fans in Thailand is that most kick off times are favorable for those of us watching from the Land of Smiles.

During the group stages, games kick off at 2am, 5pm, 8pm and 11pm Thailand time.

The knockout stages will see games kick off at either 2am or 10pm, with the final kicking off at 10pm.

At the time of publishing, no company in Thailand has secured the rights to broadcast matches from the tournament.

However, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has said that it will purchase the licensing rights if private broadcasters fail to do so in order to ensure that football fans in Thailand can watch the games.

“Thais must be able to watch the World Club live for free under the ‘must-have’ rule. If no private operators are interested in purchasing the licence, the SAT will buy it,” SAT governor Kongsak Yodmanee has said.

Ruslan Malinovsky’s 86th-minute sidetrack shot flew past a wrong-footed Wojciech Szczesny to win it for the home side, who over-leaped Juventus into third place in last month’s Serie A match. Atalanta are two points behind second-placed AC Milan, who beat Genoa 2-1. Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus are fourth, two points above fifth-placed Napoli.

Napoli could have knocked Juventus out of the top four in Sunday’s late game but they were held to a 1-1 draw by leaders Inter. The top four in Serie A will qualify for next season’s Champions League. Without the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, Juventus were struggling trying to break down their hosts and Alvaro Morata lacked composure with two presentable chances.

The Premier League is planning a social media boycott in May in response to unrelenting online abuse of players. Reported by Daily Mail, the proposal from May 1 – 3 is for clubs to boycott online media for 24 hours around their games, while the league will go silent for all three days.

It comes amid an increase in incidents of players receiving racist abuse. Premier League clubs have been asked to confirm their support for the blackout by 14:00 GMT on Monday.

Championship sides Birmingham City and Swansea and Scottish champions Rangers recently had also held week-long boycotts. Anti-discrimination charity “Kick It Out” has said it would back a Premier League-wide boycott and some Premier League managers have supported the move.

The one thing which stood out most about Bukayo Saka from an early age was his desire to succeed. His ability to beat a man and versatility were also crucial to his development with both Arsenal and England.

“He was a very quiet boy, incredibly respectful, a great listener, desperate to please and wanted to do his best,” says Neil Dewsnip, former England under18’s coach. “We played him at left-back in a very attacking 4-3-3 shape, in the same team as Mason Greenwood. Bukayo could also play as an attacking winger, and could even go over to the right-hand side, so he was very versatile.

“His ability to run past people with or without the ball was superb, as was his one-on-one dribbling, and he could score a few goals.” “He’s still in that breakthrough stage, really. He’s made a really good start to his football career, but there is a long way to go,” he says. “He was always so humble.

When you are that good at something and you are playing against others who aren’t on the same level, it is important to remain a good sportsman. One day, he’ll be Arsenal captain,” Dewsnip added. “For a coach, there is nothing better than working with a player who breaks in at national level, but equally, expectations need to be managed.

Atletico Madrid raises their standing at the top of La Liga with a convincing win in their match against struggling Eibar. Angel Correa scored twice just before half-time, heading in from close range and then stealing home Yannick Carrasco’s pass.

Atletico’s title charge has stumbled in recent weeks and injuries to key players Luis Suarez and Joao Felix have left them light in attack. But Correa’s first goals since February gave them a platform and they cut loose after the break. In a persuasive race for the La Liga title, Atletico have their destiny in their own hands but may need to win all their remaining games to secure top spot.

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) -European soccer’s breakaway Super League project lay in tatters on Tuesday after the six English Premier League clubs involved in the project quit 48 hours after agreeing to join Italian and Spanish teams in the new elite competition.

After a storm of protests from fans, players, managers and governments, alongside threats of bans and sanctions from the game’s European and world governing bodies UEFA and FIFA, the English clubs bowed to pressure and threw in the towel.

Manchester City were the first to back out of the venture and then Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur announced they were following suit.

Chelsea, whose fans protested outside their stadium before a match on Tuesday holding banners saying ‘Fans not customers’, are expected to complete the departure of the ‘Big Six’ when they submit withdrawal papers to the Super League company.

The Super League did not respond to a request for comment and the league’s chairman, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, cancelled a planned radio interview.

The league, which was announced on Sunday with 12 founding members, is now left with three Italian clubs — AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan — plus Perez’s Real Madrid along with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid from Spain.

UEFA, whose elite Champions League competition was at risk from the proposed new league, threatened to ban the clubs and players who joined the Super League but its president Aleksander Ceferin had earlier urged the English clubs to think again.

“I said yesterday that it is admirable to admit a mistake and these clubs made a big mistake,” he said after the English clubs announced their decisions to leave.

“But they are back in the fold now and I know they have a lot to offer not just to our competitions but to the whole of the European game.

“The important thing now is that we move on, rebuild the unity that the game enjoyed before this and move forward together,” he said.

Adding to the drama, Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward fell on his sword, announcing his resignation shortly before his club gave up on a project he had been influential in bringing about.

MORE MONEY

The Super League had argued that it would increase revenues to the top clubs and allow them to distribute more money to the rest of the game.

U.S. investment bank JP Morgan JPM.N was brought in to finance the new league, providing a 3.5 billion euro ($4.21 billion) grant to the founding clubs to spend on infrastructure and recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the sport’s governing bodies, other teams and fan organisations said the Super League would boost the power and wealth of the elite clubs and the partially closed structure of the league goes against European football’s long-standing model.

Unlike Europe’s current top-level Champions League competition, where teams have to qualify through their domestic league, the founding Super League teams would have guaranteed themselves a place in the new competition every year.

Most of the statements from the English club’s were short but Arsenal apologised to their fans for being involved.

“It was never our intention to cause such distress, however when the invitation to join the Super League came, while knowing there were no guarantees, we did not want to be left behind to ensure we protected Arsenal and its future.

“As a result of listening to you and the wider football community over recent days we are withdrawing from the proposed Super League. We made a mistake, and we apologise for it,” the London club said in an open letter to fans.
The magnitude of the split in the game and the strength of feeling it generated led political leaders across Europe to speak out, and, in some cases, to threaten intervention.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his government would consider passing legislation to stop the breakaway, likening the plans to creating a cartel.

The Premier League said it “unanimously and vigorously” rejected the plans. After a meeting with the 14 clubs not involved, it said it was considering “all actions available” to stop the new competition.

“We have listened carefully to the reaction from our fans, the UK government and other key stakeholders,” Manchester United said in a statement.

“We remain committed to working with others across the football community to come up with sustainable solutions to the long-term challenges facing the game.”

Sunday 21st March 2021 will go down as the day Walking Football was officially launched in Thailand at True Arena Sports Club Hua Hin. The game is played in over 56 countries around the world and it even has it’s own World Cup, which this year is being played in Malmo Sweden.

The concept of the game is very simple and easy, it is a slower version of normal football, (or soccer depends from where you come from) with a few slight rule changes such as no tackling, no physical contact with your opponents and obviously no running, which is the hardest part.

The idea is to get both men and women aged 40+ to do an activity that includes team spirit, well being and exercise at the same time. True Arena Sports Club was having an Open Weekend 19th -21st March and the organisers of Walking Football Thailand, Steve Johnston and Gary Stevens saw this as a perfect opportunity to measure the interest among the people of Hua Hin and it seemed a very successful introduction with over 40 people from both the international and Thai community turning up.

Gary is a former professional international footballer and some of his excolleagues are playing Walking Football in the UK. He thinks it is a great way to not only do something positive in your life but also just because you are a certain age does not mean that you cannot enjoy a game that you may have loved all your life and therefore you can pull on your favourite team jersey again and relive your youth.

Steve believes that this is an opportunity to develop a sport that both men and women can enjoy and maybe even help bring people together on a social aspect because sometimes some people can feel a little bit lonely, even though we are living in paradise.

This could bring something back into their lives with a sense of looking forward and meeting new friends and having fun. Would you like to join? If you are aged 40+ (both men and women) then go to the Walking Football Thailand Facebook page, press Like and look out for when the next session will take place. What have you got to lose?

Manchester City’s Phil Foden grabbed a last-minute winner as they beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday after Marco Reus netted a late equaliser for the Germans at The Etihad.

While the visitors will be bitterly disappointed to have conceded a second goal so late, Dortmund will take heart from the away goal and their overall performance and believe they have a real chance in next Wednesday’s return game.

City lacked their usual sharpness in the final third, with Pep Guardiola’s false-nine tactic not delivering benefits on this occasion, but Foden’s 90th minute goal gives them the edge.

Much of the focus before the game was on Dortmund’s prolific 20-year-old Norwegian forward Erling Haaland and while he was relatively quiet he did force a fine save out of Ederson before creating Dortmund’s equaliser.

City had taken a 19th minute lead with a classic counter-attacking move finished off by playmaker Kevin De Bruyne after Dortmund’s former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can had given the ball away to Riyad Mahrez on the halfway line.

Mahrez started the break, finding De Bruyne who burst forward and fed Foden on the left, the Englishman’s cross to the back post was over hit but Mahrez recovered to pick out De Bruyne in the middle and the Belgian slotted home.

Guardiola’s side then had a penalty awarded but correctly overturned by VAR after a challenge by Can on Rodri.

Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan believed Can’s foot had struck Rodri in the face but replays showed it merely brushed his leg despite Rodri falling to the ground holding his face.

HARSH DECISION

The referee was at the centre of attention again when Ederson hesitated and Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham nipped in and slotted the ball into the net but the 17-year-old was harshly ruled to have fouled the Brazilian.

Television replays showed Bellingham had played the ball and in fact it was Ederson who had made contact with the English youngster but VAR did not send the referee to the monitor.

Fuelled by that injustice but also given some belief that City’s defence, which had not conceded a goal in the competition since the opening game of the group stage in October, could be breached, Dortmund were positive after the break.

Ederson came to City’s rescue early in the second half, saving from Haaland with an outstretched foot as the German side pushed forward positively.

City had several chances to extend their lead though and paid the price for their uncharacteristic lack of precision in front of goal when Dortmund struck six minutes before the end.

Haaland’s clever pass on the half-turn found Reus, who had timed his run perfectly and beat Ederson with a composed finish.

But then Foden, who had been the main culprit in wasting chances, made amends with a clinical finish from close range after being set up by Ilkay Gundogan following a deep ball from De Bruyne.

City would have had hoped for a more convincing victory but, after a night when they did not really hit their usual heights, they will take a 27th win in 28 games in all competitions and a slim advantage into the second leg.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr came of age to score twice as his side punished a sloppy Liverpool to win 3-1 at home in Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The 20-year-old Brazilian fired the 13-times European champions into the lead in the 27th minute at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium after controlling a long diagonal pass from Toni Kroos from his own half which flummoxed the Liverpool defence.

Marco Asensio put the hosts further at ease by scoring in the 35th after a Kroos pass again caused havoc among the visiting backline but Liverpool looked more settled after the interval and a scrappy Mohamed Salah strike pulled them back into contention early in the second half.

But they failed to build on their momentum and Vinicius, who has a reputation for thrilling play but a lack of composure in front of goal, struck again in the 63rd minute, blasting past Liverpool keeper Alisson after clever combination play between Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.

Asensio missed a clear chance to grab Madrid’s fourth goal, while Liverpool threatened late on.

Yet the visitors were unable to find a second away goal to take back with them to Anfield next Wednesday and the game ended with the same scoreline as in the 2018 Champions League final.

Vinicius, who kissed the Real badge after scoring his first goal was pleased to finally deliver on the biggest stage of all and silence the doubters who claimed he lacked the bottle to succeed at Real.

“The people on the outside can keep talking but I kept on working, that gave me the strength to rise to an important occasion and get the goals we needed,” he told reporters.

Liverpool will take solace from the fact they managed to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona in the semi-finals in 2019 but they will be unable to count on the scorching Anfield atmosphere in the second leg.

“We didn’t let them create anything,” added Vinicius.

“The tie isn’t over, Liverpool still have a great team and will do everything to win over there so we have to go out on to the pitch just as we did tonight.”

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum criticised his side’s first-half display and lamented that they switched off for the opening two goals.

“Two moments of not concentrating enough and they scored. We weren’t sharp enough,” he said.

“We played our own game (in the second half) and that’s why we scored. Unfortunately they scored and that makes it more difficult. We hoped for a better result.”

Lionel Messi celebrates a record-breaking 768th appearance for Barcelona with two goals as the Spanish thrashed Real Sociedad 6-1 in La Liga.

Messi moved one game clear of former midfielder Xavi’s total as Barca closed the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to four points.

Antoine Greizmann opened the scoring, Sergio Dest scored twice and Ousmane Dembele also found the net.

Messi has now scored 23 league goals so far this season.

At 5-0 down, Ander Barrenetxea did manage to find a consolation goal for Sociedad with arguably the strike of the night, but it was too late to stage a fightback at the Anoeta Stadium.

Messi did not disappoint in his history-making night, showing the same energy and determination he had done throughout his career for the Catalan club.

Lionel Messi scored twice and made another on the day he equalled Xavi’s record for most Barcelona appearances.

Messi was playing for Barca for the 767th time and his curled double, along with goals from Antoine Griezmann and Oscar Mingueza, helped his side to a determining win over struggling Huesca.

Rafa Mir scored a controversial penalty for Huesca at the end of the first half, but Barcelona cruised to victory.

They move second in La Liga, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

The 33-year-old Argentina striker has won La Liga 10 times and the Champion League on four occasions among 34 trophies since he made his competitive debut as a substitute in a 1-0 away derby win against Espanyol on 16 October 2004.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel praised forward Kai Havertz after his fellow German played a vital role in the Blues’ victory over top-four rivals Everton.

His shot was turned in for an own goal by Ben Godfrey for the opener before the Germany international won a penalty, which Jorginho converted, to maintain Tuchel’s unbeaten record as Chelsea boss.

Havertz, 21, moved to London in a £71m transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in September but has only scored one Premier League goal and was making his first start since 27 January.

“I am very pleased with Kai. It was the trust we gave him and he used that trust,” said Tuchel, who has not lost in 11 games in charge since replacing the sacked Frank Lampard in January.

“He has all the ability to be a dominant figure in [attack] and he stepped up.

“There is no doubt about his quality, his talent and his character.”

Havertz also had a goal disallowed for a handball and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who had conceded the penalty, made a number of saves to deny Chelsea a bigger winning margin.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson says they cannot “rely on the past” after Chelsea inflicted a fifth successive competitive home defeat on the reigning Premier League champions for the first time.

Mason Mount’s superb individual strike three minutes before half-time gave the visitors a deserved win and extend their unbeaten run under boss Thomas Tuchel to 10 games.

It moved them into the top four, while Liverpool are now in seventh place and in a serious dogfight for the Champions League places.

The Reds, who won the title last season by 18 points, had gone 68 home league matches unbeaten before their current was started with a loss to Burnley in January.

Robertson told reporters, “we have nowhere near been good enough to what Liverpool team should be. We are dropping further and it is not good enough.”

Mount scored brilliantly when he cut inside to fire a low shot Liverpool keeper Alisson, reward for a first half dominated by the Blues, who also had a Timo Werner effort ruled out for offside.

Vinicius Jr marked his 100th Real Madrid appearance with a late equaliser against Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Madrid controlled the first half with Mariano and Raphael Varane heading off the bar in the space of two minutes.

Real Sociedad drastically improved after the break and Portu scored an excellent header from Nacho Monreal’s cross.

Zinedine Zidane changed his front three after 61 minutes and one of the replacements – Vinicius – finished from Lucas Vazquez’s cross late on.

The draw brought to an end Madrid’s five-game winning run in all competitions and means they missed out on the chance to overtake Barcelona into second place.

Real Sociedad remain in fifth place.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles says Newcastle “need to stop talking and put points on the board” after missing a chance to move further clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a draw against Wolves.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was also concerned at losing the influential Miguel Almiron, saying he “fears the worst” about the Paraguayan’s injury.

Almiron was substituted at half-time and Bruce says he will have a scan on Sunday.

Lascelles headed the hosts in front from Ryan Fraser’s cross in the second half and they looked good for their lead after a confident performance.

But Ruben Neves, who had never scored a headed goal for Wolves before, was awarded space to guide Pedro Neto’s delivery beyond Martin Dubravka to earn the visitors a point.

Dubravka, making his first Premier League appearance of the season, may have done better for Wolves’ leveller but produced a superb save to deny Fabio Silva in added time.

Newcastle were left to rue a number of missed opportunities of their own, with Almiron striking the far post after breaking the offside trap early in the first half.

It means 18th-placed Fulham can move within one point of Newcastle if they beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, while Wolves remain 12th.

“We had very good chances and we are lost for words,” Lascelles told Match of the Day. “We got a point but it should have been three points.

“A lot of positives but we need to stop talking and put the points on the board.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side “have to be more clinal” despite seeing another dominant display sweep aside Borussia Monchengladbach for a 19th successive win.

Guardiola’s team favourites to win their first Champions League title this season were far too good for their humble last-16 opposition in Budapest.

Perhaps should have added to the first-leg lead given to them by Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus.

“That is something we have to improve in this competition. Upfront we have to be more clinical. In this competition, you have to be perfect to make sure you go through.”

Silva headed in a wonderful cross from Joao Cancelo to open the scoring.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two headers as Juventus beat bottom side Crotone to go within eight points of leaders Inter Milan.

The hosts dominated the majority of the first half but had to wait until the 38th minute to make the breakthrough, with Ronaldo heading home an Alex Sandro cross.

Juventus were under pressure after defeat to Napoli had been followed by a Champions League loss against Porto, but the defending champions coasted to a comfortable success to move up to third in the table.

The five-time Ballon D’or winner doubled the lead before half-time, this time powering home a header after Aaron Ramsey had put the ball into the box.

Crotone are the 78th team in Europe’s top five leagues to concede a league goal to Ronaldo.

Weston McKennie scored Juve’s third from close range.

Ronaldo is now Serie A’s top scorer this season, with 18 – overtaking Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United’s manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his team are out to correct last season’s Europa League mistakes after they took a huge march towards the last 16 by destroying Real Sociedad 4-0 in Turin.

United, among the favourites for the rival after dropping down for the Champions was defeated by Sevilla in one of the three-cup semi-finals defeats.

Bruno Fernandez was in a great form, scoring twice as Solskjaer’s side dominated a helpless Sociedad.

Solskjaer said, “We got nothing out of getting to the semi-final last year.”

Adding, Sometimes you can say it isn’t worth it but the experience has helped the team. We have to learn on the job.

Marcus Rashford and Daniel James – who both missed their chances but then scored on the counter.

Sociedad was top of La Liga when the draw was made but were abject throughout a game played in Italy because of pandemic restrictions.

They failed to test United goalkeeper Dean Henderson seriously and were caught out on the break by the pace of Solskjaer’s frontline.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he was pleased with his players’ mentality in their FA Cup fifth-round win against West Ham after “feeling low” following the draw with Everton.

Scott McTominay scored in extra time to send the Red Devils into the quarter-finals.

And Solskjaer felt his players provided the perfect response to conceding a late equaliser in the 3-3 draw with the Toffees on Saturday.

He said, “We needed to have a good result and a good feeling today because we were low after the Everton game.”

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said he felt the players showed their strength of character to bounce back from the Everton result.

he said, “Last Saturday was tough – especially in the second half.”

“We showed great spirit and a good mentality to come back and perform. We know it’s a long season and tonight was perfect. It’s important to get through.”

On a bitterly cold night at Old Trafford, the hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock inside 90 minutes when Lukasz Fabianski reacted quickly to turn the ball on to a post after Victor Lindelof’s header had taken a huge deflection off Craig Dawson.

However, in a game that included a historic concussion substitution – when Issa Diop was replaced at half-time by Ryan Fredericks – McTominay had the final word.

It means United have reached the last eight for a seventh consecutive year as they bid to lift the trophy for the first time since 2016.
