The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has reported that Thailand welcomed over 28 million foreign tourists in 2023 surpassing its target of 25 million.

Tourist arrivals in Thailand in 2023 generated 1.2 trillion baht in revenue.

A major boost in tourism numbers came towards the end of the year, attributed to the government’s policy changes. These included visa exemption measures for Chinese and Indian tourists, extended stays for Russian visitors, and simplified border crossing procedures for Malaysian tourists.

Additionally, the success was fueled by the collaborative efforts in organizing the Thailand Winter Festival, a project involving the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, TAT, the Ministry of Culture Bangkok, and various private sector partners.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool

Statistical data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for the period of January 1 to December 31, 2023, revealed that the top five source countries for tourists were Malaysia (4.56 million), China (3.52 million), South Korea (1.66 million), India (1.63 million), and Russia (1.48 million).

Furthermore, the New Year’s Eve festival, a nationwide celebration welcoming 2024, played a significant role in enhancing Thailand’s global image.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT, said the event saw vibrant celebrations across various regions. In Bangkok, the festivities were marked by grand firework displays and spectacular sound and light shows. The highlight was the “Amazing Thailand Countdown to 2024” at the iconic Wat Arun Ratchawararam, which was broadcast live to over 347 million households worldwide on CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live.”

Other provinces like Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Nakhon Phanom, Roi Et, Suphan Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phuket, and Songkhla also hosted major countdown events, contributing to the festive atmosphere and further stimulating the nation’s economy.

Thailand will permanently waive visa requirements for Chinese citizens starting March 1, announced Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Tuesday.

During a press conference after a cabinet meeting at the government house, Srettha said Thailand had previously granted a temporary visa waiver status for visitors from China, which was set to end on Feb. 29, 2024. After negotiations with related Chinese authorities, the Thai government has now opted to adopt a permanent visa-free policy for Chinese citizens from March.

He said that this measure will not only boost Thailand’s tourism industry but also signify further improvement in the friendly relations between the two countries.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Thailand’s economy, with 28 million foreign tourist arrivals recorded in 2023, including about 4.4 million visitors from Malaysia, and 3.4 million from China — the two largest source markets.

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on 16th December following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. It is expected that 35 tigers in total will eventually be rescued from the farm.

The initial rescue was difficult and intense, with the first fifteen animals chosen on the basis of who required the most urgent medical care. Twelve elderly tigers and three ill leopards were selected, before being sedated, given initial health checks, and transported into transport cages that were loaded onto wildlife ambulances.

Emaciated, elderly tiger Salamas was among the first to be rescued. While most other tigers were sedated so that they could safely be moved into transport cages, Salamas’s worrying condition meant that the veterinary team advised against this due to the risk of her not waking up from the sedation.

Rescuers instead spent hours gently encouraging the twenty-year-old tiger with food so that she would walk from her concrete enclosure into the transport cage. It was feared that she was too weak to walk, but eventually she gathered her strength and stumbled over to the cage. She was then able to be lifted to the specialist wildlife ambulance that made the twelve hour overnight drive to the wildlife rescue sanctuary. Although alarmingly skinny and with huge patches of fur missing across her body, rescuers are hopeful that Salamas will now begin to recover.

Other big cats rescued include a timid female tiger the farm simply referred to as “A-1”, and a twenty-year old male tiger named Rambo who has breathing difficulties.

These animals have been kept in small, concrete enclosures for their entire lives, with many of them spending over twenty years in captivity. It is therefore believed that their new sanctuary home will be the first time that many of these animals will have felt grass beneath their paws and sunlight on their fur.

The rescue tigers and leopards will now receive urgent medical care at their new forever home at WFFT, which currently looks after nine other tigers, who were all previously rescued when a notorious Thai zoo closed down during the pandemic.

Located in Phetchaburi, the sanctuary’s dedicated Tiger Rescue Centre allows the rescue tigers to live freely in over seventeen acres of near-natural habitat, where the animals can run around, swim in the lake, and socialise with other tigers. In preparation for the latest rescue, WFFT secured additional land at the Centre and spent several months constructing more habitat space for the new arrivals.

The undisclosed tiger zoo and farm is not being named by WFFT, but online press articles report that the facility has been embroiled in legal action with government wildlife officials for many years. It has faced several government visits already, including in 2020 when the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) found evidence of wildlife trafficking such as a severed tiger’s head and other tiger parts.

Located in northern Thailand, the area is a known hotspot for illegal wildlife trafficking because of its proximity to the border of Lao PDR. It has been reported in the press that the facility has long been suspected of being used as a holding facility for wildlife before being shipped across the border.

The facility was reported to hold 46 tigers and cubs as of 2021.

Edwin Wiek, founder and director of Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) said:

“After months of planning the biggest tiger rescue by an NGO in Thailand’s history, we are thrilled to now finally give these magnificent animals a new life at WFFT’s Tiger Rescue Centre. Sadly, they will never be able to return to the wild, but we can offer them the next best thing: a safe, sanctuary home where they can roam forested land, socialise with other tigers, and even swim in the lake. We are grateful to the Thai government’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNP) for taking action against the illegal wildlife trade and for collaborating with WFFT to help give these tigers the second chance that they deserve.”

“The first twelve tigers and three leopards have been rescued, but there are many more who remain at the farm still waiting to be saved. We are desperate to return as soon as possible to rescue them, but as an NGO without government funding we rely solely on donations to make these rescue missions a reality. If you can, please support us at wfft.org/donate to help save the remaining animals from this tiger farm.”

The popular Thai dish Phat Kaphrao has been declared the third best dish in the world by Taste Atlas, a renowned online food website.

The accolade highlights the dish’s unique blend of flavors and ingredients that have captivated food enthusiasts worldwide.

Phat Kaphrao is known for its flavorful combination of minced meat or seafood with holy basil, shallots, garlic, and chili peppers, has earned this prestigious ranking from Taste Atlas.

This traditional Thai stir-fry is a testament to Thai cuisine, which itself was ranked 17th globally in a recent survey by Taste Atlas. Thai cuisine’s position on the list places it just ahead of South Korean cuisine, and follows top-ranked cuisines from Italy, Japan, and Greece.

In the ranking, Phat Kaphrao was surpassed only by Brazil’s Picanha and Malaysia’s Roti Canai. Notably, other Thai dishes have also received recognition, with Khao Soi, a northern Thai curry noodle dish, ranking sixth, and Panaeng curry, a type of red curry, securing the tenth spot.

Taste Atlas had previously awarded Phat Kaphrao the title of the world’s best stir-fry dish in September.

The website describes Phat Kaphrao as a quintessential Thai stir-fry that skillfully blends minced meat or seafood with holy basil, complemented by ingredients like shallots, garlic, and chili peppers. The dish is seasoned with soy sauce, sugar, and fish sauce, and is typically served with rice, a fried egg, and additional fish sauce on the side. Interestingly, Phat Kaphrao is also the fourth most commonly ordered dish by foreigners in Thailand, a testament to its widespread appeal.

Taste Atlas is an online platform dedicated to documenting and promoting local and traditional foods from around the world.

The website provides insights into various cuisines, offering a comprehensive guide for food enthusiasts seeking authentic culinary experiences. Through its extensive database and expert reviews, Taste Atlas has become a respected authority in the culinary world, making its rankings highly esteemed in the food industry.

This recognition of Phat Kaphrao and Thai cuisine more broadly underscores the global appeal for Thai food.

Earlier this year we teamed up with Feast Thailand to find out about some of the different Pad Krapow varieties in Hua Hin.

(NNT) – Clubs and bars in major provinces of Thailand will be allowed to open as late as 4 a.m. from 15 December onwards, according to the latest ministerial regulation announced by the Ministry of Interior. Venues holding New Year celebrations will also be allowed to operate until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day, as part of a special arrangement.

The government’s initiative to extend the opening hours of entertainment venues in major cities is being realized, with the latest ministerial regulation set to enable clubs and bars in key provinces to open until as late as 4 a.m., effective from 15 December.

Ms. Traisuree Taisaranakul, a secretary to the Minister of Interior and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Interior, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul had already signed a ministerial regulation on the extension of opening hours at entertainment venues.

According to this regulation, entertainment venues in five areas, namely Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Ko Samui will be able to open until 4 a.m. Entertainment venues located inside hostels can also open until 4 a.m., regardless of their location.

For New Year holidays, entertainment venues across the country, regardless of their location, will be allowed to open from New Year’s Eve on 31 December until 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day on 1 January.

This new ministerial regulation will soon be officially announced in the Royal Gazette, which shall ensure the new opening hours will be effective from 15 December onwards.

Ms Traisuree said the new arrangement has been instructed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Srettha Thavisin, who has ordered the Ministry of Interior to revamp the regulations on entertainment venues, in an attempt to boost tourism activities.

UNESCO, the United Nations Agency for Education, Science, Culture, Communication, and Information, has officially recognized the Thai Songkran Festival as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The announcement was made during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Kasane, Botswana.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the Thai government and its people. He stated that the annual festival reflects the core values of gratitude, benevolence, and unity among Thai people.

Songkran is widely known for its lively water-splashing activities, symbolizing Thailand’s rich cultural diversity, creativity, and communal spirit. This recognition marks “Songkran in Thailand” as the fourth Thai element to be listed in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage inventory. This follows the inclusion of the “Khon” masked dance performance in 2018, “Thai Massage” in 2019, and the “Nora” dance performance from Southern Thailand in 2021.

In celebration of this honor, the Ministry of Culture is organizing an event titled “Songkran in Thailand, Traditional Thai New Year Festival” at Lan Khon Muang and Wat Suthat Thepwararam in Bangkok. The event, open to the public, is scheduled to commence tomorrow at 6 PM.

The recognition of Thai intangible cultural heritage, which involves practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills, underscores its vital role in the nation’s cultural identity. It also contributes significantly to the Sustainable Development Goals, reinforcing the cultural fabric and heritage of Thailand on a global platform.

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to grant provincial governors powers similar to those of a company CEO, aligning with its decentralization policy. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting and is set to take effect from October 1, 2024, for the fiscal year 2025.

Under the new policy, provincial governors will have the authority to conduct performance appraisals, adjust salaries, offer special rewards, and take disciplinary actions against senior civil servants in their provinces. This is in accordance with Section 53 of the 2022 royal decree on integrated area-based administration.

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) submitted this proposal, which includes the introduction of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure provincial achievements. These KPIs will play a role in government decisions regarding budget allocation and development plans. Provinces have been instructed to prepare a 20-year provincial development outlook and detail their current annual development plans.

The Ministry of Interior has also been tasked with compiling this data for the Budget Bureau to incorporate into the state budget distribution. Governors are expected to soon receive formal briefings on their new roles and responsibilities under this decree.

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI), Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

The Index places Thailand at the lower end of the scale both regionally and globally, with a score of 416, significantly below the global average of 502.

The EF EPI, which evaluates English proficiency across the world, revealed Thailand’s position as the lowest among the ASEAN countries tested. This benchmarking highlights a concerning trend in English language skills within the region.

Of particular note is Prachuap Khiri Khan, which recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437).

The EF EPI bases its rankings on the EF Standard English Test (EF SET), an online test focusing on reading and listening skills. This test is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and is designed to objectively classify language abilities. In 2022, over 2.2 million individuals from 113 countries participated in this assessment.

Globally, the EF EPI sorts countries and territories into five proficiency bands, ranging from Very High to Very Low. The Netherlands claimed the top spot with a score of 647, followed closely by Singapore (631), and Austria (616). Within Asia, Singapore leads the rankings, followed by the Philippines (578), Malaysia (568), Hong Kong (558), and South Korea (525).

The executive summary of the EF EPI report indicated a slight decline in English proficiency levels across South and Southeast Asia, despite some countries in the region showing stable or modest improvements.

It noted the impact of India’s gradually declining proficiency levels and pointed out that the progress Thailand had made until 2020 was significantly set back by the pandemic.

Furthermore, the report observed low and stable proficiency levels in Central Asia, with notable gender gaps favoring men in almost every surveyed country.

This most recent analysis presents a challenging picture for Thailand, particularly for regions like Prachuap Khiri Khan, underscoring the need for enhanced focus on English language education to improve global communication and competitiveness.

The Thai government has announced a visa waiver for tourists from India and Taiwan starting November 10, extending through to May 10 next year.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin shared the news with the media following a cabinet meeting held Tuesday (Oct 31).

Last month, Thailand had temporarily lifted visa requirements for travelers from China and Kazakhstan, a program that ran for five months and concluded at the end of February.

So far this year, Thailand has welcomed over 20 million international visitors, recovering more than half of its pre-Covid tourism traffic, which nearly touched 40 million.

The country is optimistic, projecting tourist arrivals to reach up to 28 million by the close of the year.

Statistics from the Tourism Authority of Thailand indicate that tourists from Malaysia have dominated the influx this year, surpassing 3 million. Chinese tourists, who once held the record as the largest group of visitors to Thailand, have also made a significant comeback, with numbers reaching 2.65 million as of October 15.

The tourism agency anticipates that by the end of 2023, the number of Chinese visitors might surge to between 4 and 4.4 million.

Meanwhile, Indian tourists, currently Thailand’s fourth-largest source of tourism, have also shown substantial presence with approximately 1.2 million arrivals so far, ranking after Malaysia, China, and South Korea.

“Travelers from India and Taiwan will be granted a 30-day stay upon their arrival in Thailand,” announced spokesperson Chai Wacharonke, highlighting the ease and accessibility this visa waiver brings to potential tourists from these regions.

The Meteorological Department is set to declare the commencement of winter early next week, which is approximately two weeks later than the typical schedule.

This delay is due to the lingering weak cool winds and an anticipated milder temperature trend.

Mr. Somkhuan Tonjan, Director of the Meteorological Observation Division from the Thai Meteorological Department, stated that rainfall would persist in the northern parts of the country, due to the diminishing cool winds, while Bangkok is expected to experience easterly and southeasterly winds along with higher humidity levels.

During this week, moderately cold winds will envelop the northern regions, leading to cooler temperatures in the Northeast. Some areas might experience rain before it gradually declines. The Meteorological Department is likely to make the official announcement of the onset of winter early next week.

In Thailand, winter is considered to have arrived when the lowest temperature remains below 23 degrees Celsius. Apart from the delayed start, Mr. Somkhuan mentioned that this winter would be comparatively less cold than usual. The coldest period is expected to be from early December to late January, with an average temperature ranging from 21 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Bars and clubs in key tourist areas are set to be allowed to stay open until 4am, as part of a new pilot project.

The proposed extension is set to come into effect from the upcoming New Year festival.

Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai were cited as likely destinations for the 4am extension.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, addressed the policy change on Monday (Oct 30).

Mr Anutin told Thai media the government has set a deadline of December 15th for the public consultation process to be completed, with the aim of proposing the new regulation to the cabinet for approval thereafter.

Mr. Anutin outlined the parameters of the pilot project, stating that the extended hours are intended for law-abiding citizens and tourists.

He underscored the importance of adhering to legal standards and responsible behavior, highlighting that the service is not for those intending to engage in unlawful activities.

Strict compliance with rules, including no drunk driving, no carrying of weapons, no drug selling, an age restriction of 20 years and above, and no violence, will be enforced.

The Deputy Prime Minister also addressed questions regarding the selection of pilot areas for the extended service hours, stating that the focus is on tourist provinces with a significant influx of foreign visitors.

He assured that the initiative would be carried out in collaboration with the Royal Thai Police to ensure the strict enforcement of laws and maintenance of public safety.

However, the announcement has raised questions about whether the new 4am closing time will be applied in other tourist areas, such as Hua Hin.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the extended hours will be extended to this popular destination, leaving local businesses and tourists awaiting further clarification.

Thailand implements visa-free travel for Chinese Visitors

DidaTravel – a tech-driven global travel distribution company – has revealed remarkable hotel sales growth following Thailand’s recent announcement of the visa exemption scheme for Chinese travellers.

The Thai government’s decision to implement a five-month visa-free travel period for Chinese tourists, starting from September 25th until February 29th, 2024, has been met with great enthusiasm.

The positive impact of this policy change is already evident, as Chinese travellers’ bookings for Thailand hotels achieved 30% growth immediately following the implementation of the policy on September 25th compared to the same day last week.

During this year’s Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays Chinese travellers’ hotel bookings in Thailand have increased by a staggering 700% compared to the previous year as demand approaches 2019 levels. The Average Daily Rate (ADR) has also witnessed a significant rise of 42% year-on-year. These statistics reflect the growing interest and confidence of Chinese travelers in Thailand as a preferred holiday destination.

When it comes to popular Thai destinations, Chinese travelers have shown a strong preference for cities such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and the picturesque islands of Koh Samui, Ko Phi Phi, and Krabi. Additionally, the serene coastal towns of Hua Hin, Ko Chang, and Sunset Beach have also garnered attention, offering visitors a chance to relax and unwind amidst breathtaking natural beauty.

Gareth Matthews, DidaTravel’s Chief Marketing Officer commented: “Thailand is well known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. We are excited about the recent announcement from the government of Thailand to implement visa-free travel for Chinese visitors. At DidaTravel we connect 4,000 hotels with competitive prices in Thailand and recognize the immense potential this holds for our industry”.

With the introduction of this visa exemption scheme, Thailand envisions welcoming around 4 – 4.4 million Chinese tourists in 2023, thereby achieving the forecasted revenue target of 257,500 million Baht. These figures demonstrate the immense potential for collaboration and mutual benefit between Thailand and China in the tourism sector.

Barclays Bank has announced its decision to terminate the UK current and savings accounts for British expatriates living overseas, a move that comes after a review of the bank’s international offerings initiated in 2021.

This will affect numerous British citizens residing in countries like Thailand, among others.

Affected customers have received official communication from Barclays giving them a six-month period to prepare and make necessary arrangements. While the decision has left some customers disappointed, Barclays maintains that its UK banking products are specially tailored for residents in Britain.

A Barclays spokesman said: “We will no longer be offering personal current or savings accounts to retail customers with addresses registered with us outside of the United Kingdom, subject to limited exceptions. We are contacting impacted customers to give them advance notice of this decision and explain the next steps they need to take.”

A notice, still available for viewing on the Barclays’ website, explicitly states, “If you live outside the UK or you’re planning to move abroad in the future, there will be changes to your banking and investment products and services. You won’t be able to open any new products or services with us, or increase borrowing limits on your existing accounts.”

While the move by Barclays raises concerns, the bank offers an alternative for affected customers. Expatriates have the option of opening a global account with Barclays. However, there’s a caveat: account holders must maintain a minimum balance of £100,000 to dodge a monthly fee of £40.

“I’ve been banking with Barclays for decades, and this decision is deeply disappointing,” said a British expat residing in Hua Hin. “It feels like they’re pushing us away.”

Even those who aren’t Barclays customers have expressed concerns over the broader implications of such a decision. A reader of Hua Hin Today shared, “I don’t bank with Barclays, but this move worries me. What if other British banks decide to follow suit?”
