Here is the 2024 schedule for when people can climb to the top of the Khao Lom Muak in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Khao Lom Muak offers some of the most spectacular 360 degree views of Ao Manao and the surrounding area.

The viewpoint is located in the Wing 5 Military Base and is only open at certain times throughout the year, normally during national holidays or on long weekends.

The viewpoint is located approximately 98km from central Hua Hin and takes around 1.5 hours to drive there by car.

Hiking to the top is under the supervision of military personnel from the base.

It is 902ft to the summit and there are 496 steps to climb on the way. The ascent can take well over an hour, more likely closer to two hours.

The trail starts off fairly easy but gets more difficult as you get closer to the summit.

At certain points you need to hoist yourself up using the ropes that are secured along the trail.

Military personnel are on hand to provide assistance to people who may need it.

Like many army bases in Thailand there are often activities geared towards tourists and Wing 5 is no different.

Some of the attractions located at Wing 5 include:

Visit the Khao Lom Muak Shrine.

Observe Southern spectacled langurs (they enjoy boiled peanuts, feel free to bring some). These animals are generally friendly and regarded as the mascots of the province.

Relax on the beach: The neighbouring Ao Manao beach is one of the most picturesque in the province and is well worth visiting. (rental beach beds available for 20 Baht) or bring your own mats and chairs.

Enjoy paddleboarding, sightseeing boats, banana boats, ATV rides, archery, and feeding goats and turkeys. Contact staff at the Wing 5 camp for more information.

Don’t ever let it be said there is nothing to do in Hua Hin.

Over the past year, Hua Hin Today has covered a wide range of activities and things to see and do within a 30 minute to 1-hour drive of Hua Hin, helping to highlight the myriad ways to engage with the great outdoors and other interesting pursuits.

From camping and exploring Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park, which is right on our doorstep, to savoring the culinary delights of Phetchaburi, which is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, our region is brimming with adventures.

Among these, there’s one activity that might be familiar in concept, but its vibrant presence in our area is either little known or overlooked completely: bird watching.

A real hotbed for this pastime, Hua Hin and the surrounding area is a dream come true for bird watchers.

David Stacf, a local amateur bird watcher, recently shared his insights and experiences in bird watching, revealing Hua Hin as a premier destination for this tranquil hobby.

David doesn’t claim to be an expert but rather just happy to share his passion for bird watching with other people living or visiting Hua Hin.

We recently bumped into David at Fort Thannarat army camp while we were researching all the activities you can do there. The special feature about the army camp was in the November issue of Hua Hin Today and is available on our website. Check it out if you haven’t seen it already.

Anyway, on the day we met, David was bird watching (of course) and actually showed us several hornbills that live in the trees next to Tha Sadet in the army camp. It’s quite unusual to see hornbills in a location like that.

David, who has been indulging in bird watching for about six years, found his love for the hobby after retiring. “I was just hooked,” he says, recounting how his school friend, a lifelong bird watcher, introduced him to the practice in the UK. This hobby blossomed into a passion and since living in Thailand, he has connected with fellow bird enthusiasts from around the globe.

“I’ve made contacts through my love of birding and I’ve met lots of people because of it. People from all over the place, such as America, Norway, Singapore, Thailand and Switzerland. It introduces you to so many people”.

Hua Hin and its surroundings offer a plethora of spots for bird watching, according to David. Top local destinations include Kaeng Krachan, Pak Thale in Phetchaburi, Sam Roi Yot, and Fort Thanarat. These areas are must-visits for anyone interested in bird watching. For those willing to venture further, David suggests exploring Thailand’s national parks, with Khao Yai being the most popular due to its diverse bird population and location – it’s easy to reach from the northeast and central Thailand, as well as from Bangkok.

A hornbill

Lesser-known locations like the beaches around Hua Hin, Pranburi Forest Park, Sirindhorn Environmental Park in Cha-am, and Cha-am Forest Park are also recommended by David for early morning bird watching excursions.

The region is home to a variety of birds, including numerous species of kingfishers and egrets.

“Thailand has got something like 14 different types of Kingfishers,” David notes, highlighting the unique bird diversity in the country. He recommends the ‘Birds of Thailand’ guidebook by Uthai Treesucon and Wich’yanan Limparungpatthanakji for those interested in learning more about these birds, available at local bookshops, including the one in BluPort.

David emphasizes the importance of tools like the Merlin app for identifying birds and the E-Bird app for tracking sightings. These resources are invaluable for both novice and experienced bird watchers.

For those new to bird watching, David suggests, “get yourself a good pair of binoculars and a bird guide book and get out there.”

“And binoculars don’t have to be expensive. It’s like everything. You can spend a crazy amount of money on a pair of binoculars but you don’t need to. There’s lots of good Japanese and German binoculars. It makes all the difference if you can clearly see the bird.”

He notes that while bird watching is popular in Thailand, for some, bird photography is also a significant aspect of the hobby.

The best time for bird watching, according to David, is early in the morning. This time offers cooler temperatures and more active bird life.

“Once the sun rises, the first two hours is the best time for birding and you want to find somewhere where the birds feed. Once you do that you are likely to always see something.”

He says people travel from all over the world to come bird watching in Thailand due to the sheer variety of birds that can be seen here.

He also mentions Pak Thale in Phetchaburi as a notable spot for viewing rare birds like the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, a species with a dwindling global population.

“Actually, at Pak Thale, at certain times of the year you can see the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, which there are thought to be only a few hundred left in the world. The birds come here every winter,” David says.

Spoon-billed Sandpiper

David is part of various bird watching groups and often travels to meet fellow enthusiasts. He finds these groups through platforms like Facebook and highlights the expertise of local Thai birders who offer guided tours.

David shares that bird watching in Hua Hin is not just about the birds; it’s a social activity that brings people together. “You meet lots of people,” he says, “It’s the perfect social thing.”

“When we go out and look at the birds we take a picnic with us and find somewhere nice to sit or go for a nice walk. So you get the physical activity and you get the pleasure of being outdoors. And it doesn’t cost you a lot. It’s the perfect social thing. And you meet lots of people. Also the community is really helpful, always offering tips, advice and sharing knowledge.”

Hua Hin is gearing up for a first of its kind fitness event as the world-renowned HYROX competition makes its debut in the city on December 16th.

The event, which has seen a meteoric rise since its inception in Germany, now spans over 16 countries and 30 cities worldwide and has been dubbed the world’s fastest-growing fitness sport.

HYROX, a fusion of cardio and strength challenges, involves participants running 1km followed by a workout station, a sequence repeated eight times. This unique format has attracted over 90,000 athletes globally in 2023 alone, from various backgrounds, emphasizing its appeal to a broad range of fitness enthusiasts.

The Hua Hin HYROX event is not only testament to the global appeal of the sport but also the thriving local fitness community and is organized in part by local athlete and personal trainer Romain Chevalier.

Romain, who placed an impressive 11th in the Men’s Elite category at a recent HYROX competition in Singapore, represents the high caliber of the organizing team.

The HYROX event in Hua Hin marks the beginning of a larger plan to introduce “Hyrox Thailand” next year.

In addition, CrossFit HuaHin has been granted the official HYROX license, becoming only the second gym in Thailand to achieve this distinction.

Following the event, Coach Romain Chevalier will lead a 6-week HYROX Training Camp, offering thrice-weekly sessions that include strength training, cardio workouts, and specialized HYROX training, aiming to enhance participants’ overall athletic prowess.

HYROX is designed to be inclusive, catering to both professional athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts. The event boasts a completion rate of over 98%, with no time limit for finishing and no pre-qualification required for participation. This approach encourages participants to compete at their own pace, supported by friends, family, and fellow athletes.

One of the unique aspects of HYROX is its structure, which alleviates the common fear of ‘coming last’ in a race. Start waves, organized every 10 minutes throughout the day, cover all age groups and divisions. This means that participants with varying completion times, from three hours to under one hour, can cross the finish line simultaneously.

Want to take part? You can register here.

The schedule for the Dec 16 event are as follows:

9:00 am – 9:15 am

As Hua Hin prepares to welcome its new elevated train station, set to open on December 11, the State Railway of Thailand has released a revised train schedule effective December 15, offering enhanced travel options for commuters between Hua Hin and Bangkok.

All ticketing services will transition to the new Hua Hin train station from December 11.

The most significant change comes on December 15, when all train operations to and from Hua Hin will be transferred to the new elevated station.

This shift coincides with the implementation of a new rail timetable, which is a result of introduction of the new dual track line and which promises a faster journey between Hua Hin and the capital.

Most train services between these two destinations will now operate from and to the new Krung Them Apiwat station.

Of note for travelers from Bangkok to Hua Hin is the Special Express #43. This service departs from Bangkok’s Krung Them Apiwat station at 7:30 AM, ensuring passengers arrive in Hua Hin by 10:30 AM. The introduction of this express train marks a significant step in reducing travel time.

Meanwhile, duration for trains from Hua Hin to Bangkok, is slightly longer with the shortest travel time is the Special Express #44, with a travel time of approximately 3hrs 31mins or the Rapid train #172 which clocks in at 3hrs 33mins.

How to buy train tickets in Hua Hin

Passengers interested in these services can purchase tickets either in person at the Hua Hin Train Station or online through the official State Railway of Thailand (SRT) ticketing website at https://www.dticket.railway.co.th/.

Tickets can also be purchased through the SRT D Ticket app which is available on Android and iOS.

Find out if your train is delayed

In addition, the SRT provides an online Train Tracking System that enables you to see real time information about your train so you can find out if it is delayed or running on time.

In Hua Hin, life for expatriates can be an adventure, filled with new experiences, cultural discoveries, and a laid-back lifestyle that many can only dream of.

However, while you’re busy enjoying life, have you ever stopped to consider how you would handle a medical emergency?

It is a situation that many expats overlook until it is too late, leading to unnecessary delays and expenses that could have been avoided with the right preparation.

During a recent and comprehensive interview, Dr. Pongsak Boonyaleephun, the Assistant Hospital Director of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, shared some really useful and important information on how expats and tourists alike can navigate the healthcare system in Thailand, prepare for medical emergencies and who to call in the event of an emergency.

Dr Pongsak also provided information on the upcoming expansion of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, which is set to begin in 2024.

Preparing for medical emergencies: The vital ‘ICE’ envelope

Dr. Pongsak emphasized the importance of being prepared for a medical emergency, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions.

“It is vital to have all your medication information readily available,” he advises, encouraging patients to take clear photos of their medications, including the name and dosage.

“If you have a pre-existing condition, you should have all the information regarding the medication you need to be easily available to you”.

“I always advise that people take photos of their medications and that the photo captures the name, ingredients and dosage.

“This is useful for when you run out of medication or maybe you forget it when you are traveling.

“The photographs enable you to easily show a pharmacist the exact type of medication you require,” Dr Pongsak explained.

Moreover, Dr. Pongsak introduced the concept of the ‘ICE’ envelope, or ‘In Case of Emergency’ envelope as a key component of emergency preparedness.

He emphasized the importance of the ICE envelope, especially when individuals are not in a state to communicate their medical history or preferences.

This envelope should contain comprehensive information about an individual’s medical conditions, allergies, medication details, a copy of their passport and details of their medical insurance, should they have it.

“Having an ICE envelope ready ensures that whether it’s you, a friend, or a spouse, crucial information is accessible easily and can save precious time in emergency situations,” he stated.

Call 1669 in an emergency

In cases of medical emergencies, Dr. Pongsak highlighted the significance of the emergency number 1669, which connects callers to the nearest emergency dispatch centre in Thailand.

“1669 is the number to call in a medical emergency.  But at the same time you should contact the hospital, if you are a regular patient there and we  will work with the first responders”.

“This ensures we are on the same wavelength and we can communicate with them if  you prefer to come here as they would normally send patients to a government hospital”.

Discussing the capabilities of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, Dr. Pongsak expressed confidence in the hospital’s ability to handle most emergencies, with specialized care available for cardiovascular issues and stroke.

“We have 24 hours a day seven days a week neurologist and neurosurgeon on call, investigation technology, CT scan and MRI facilities”.

However, he mentioned certain cases might require transfer to a specialized facility.

On the topic of vaccines, Dr. Pongsak recommended annual flu shots for all ages.

“The first vaccine people should think about is the flu vaccine which you need every year. And that’s for all ages, from young to old but especially when you get older,” Dr Pongsak said.

“But even if you have the vaccine, it doesn’t mean that you will not catch the flu. It just means you are less likely to get it or that the symptoms may be less severe,” he explained.

There are some other vaccines people should consider, including for dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis, among others. People should check their vaccine status every year. For more information, see the vaccine timetable included in this article. In all instances regarding vaccines, it is important to consult your physician.

For general health, he urged the community to maintain a healthy lifestyle, emphasizing the need to exercise regularly and maintain a balanced diet in order to not become overweight.

Upcoming expansion of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin

Looking ahead, Dr. Pongsak shared news about the expansion of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin, indicating significant growth and enhancements in the hospital’s facilities and services.

“Currently we have 60 patient rooms but after the expansion there will be 150 patient rooms,” Dr. Pongsak said.

“In addition, the number of outpatient clinics will increase from 20 to 35, while we will also double the size of our ICU and emergency room.”

The expansion project will begin in 2024 and is expected to be completed in 2026.

Dr. Pongsak’s insights underscore the importance of being prepared for medical emergencies and taking proactive steps to maintain good health.

The ‘ICE’ envelope emerges as a crucial tool in this preparation, and the expansion of Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin looks set to provide improved healthcare services in the region.

A military base is perhaps not the first place that comes to mind when thinking about tourist destinations in and around Hua Hin. But at the Fort Thanarat army camp, near Hua Hin, there’s loads to see and do, and it’s open to the public.

Located in Pranburi along Phetkasem Road, the expansive Thanarat Military Camp covers a vast territory spanning over 730,000 rai.

It’s not just a functioning military facility, but also a hotspot for a range of tourist activities. The Infantry Center, a key division of the camp and a direct subordinate of the department of Army training command, now commanded by Major General Awut Phuttha-Amnuay, offers an array of activities for tourists.

The shooting range at Fort Thanarat. This is open to the public by appointment.

Visitors can challenge themselves with rock climbing, tower jumping, and sharpen their skills at the shooting range.

For those interested in exploring nature and getting some exercise, an excellent bicycle route commences at the camp’s entrance and runs parallel to the Pranburi River, making for a scenic 30-kilometer round trip.

Golfers can enjoy a full 18-hole course and a driving range, with very affordable rates to play; green fees are 800 THB for the general public, 600 THB for guests of members, and 200 THB for members, while the driving range is available at 20 THB.

Fort Thanarat Golf Course

Swimmers are not left out, with a standard 50-meter pool available. For its efforts in promoting tourism, the Infantry Center received the “Thailand Tourism Awards 2002.”

The fort is readily accessible to the public; anyone can simply drive into the military camp to explore and take a leisurely walk or cycle around the premises.

However, for those wishing to fully utilize all the amenities and attractions, prior contact with the tourism office is essential.

Whether it’s the shooting range, zip line, abseiling wall, or camping facilities, arrangements can be made by reaching out to the staff via Line a couple of days before your visit. The staff will then facilitate your visit, providing guidance and information on the facility.

Zip line at Fort Thannarat

Inside the camp, visitors will be greeted by natural beauty – from woods to the flowing waterways.

Here are some highlights which you can visit yourself. For other activities such as rock climbing or shooting, you need to book ahead.

Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat Monument

A tribute to Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, the former 11th Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Chief Army Commander, and Chief of Police. This monument houses his biography, clothing, personal belongings, and insignia.

The Infantry Hall of Fame

Adjacent to the Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat Memorial, this outdoor hall proudly displays granite slabs inscribed with the names of 65 notable army veterans, including six Prime Ministers, with General Prayut Chan-o-cha being the 29th.

Infantry Museum

This museum showcases a range of military weaponry from swords to tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, and military uniforms spanning from the Ayutthaya period to modern times. *At the time of publishing it was closed due to renovation.

Monument to Ancient Warriors

Celebrating the collaboration between Thailand and the U.S. in 1958, this monument is a testament to the combined military and technological efforts of the two nations.

Phra Si Maha Bodhi Tree

A place of spiritual significance, this tree was a gift from Bodh Gaya, India, and was ceremoniously planted in 1968. It remains an important Buddhist site within the camp.

Chao Por Chalak Chalam Shrine

A sacred spot housing the revered Thao Wessuwan statue, this shrine attracts visitors seeking blessings for protection, safety, and happiness.

Tha Sadet

A picturesque riverside location on the western edge of the camp with flower gardens, literary plants, and a pavilion housing an image of King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V. A perfect spot for picnics and relaxation. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, camping near Tha Sadet is available—bring your own tent, but facilities like toilets and car parking are provided for a fee of 150 THB per night.

Be sure to contact the staff at the tourism office to arrange this prior to your arrival. Additionally, the area around Tha Sadet is a fantastic spot for birdwatching. During our visit, we were fortunate enough to spot an owl and three hornbills.

Monument to King Nassuan

This statue, located in front of the Assault and Airborne Warfare Division, commemorates King Nassuan’s bravery and leadership in Thai military history.

Khao Noi Viewpoint

Offering breathtaking views from its 50-meter height, this viewpoint not only gives visitors a panoramic sight of the camp but also of the adjacent Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and the Tanao Sri mountain range. It offers views of both sunrise and sunset.

An athlete based in Hua Hin recently won a silver medal at the Asian Games competition in Hangzhou, China.

Having begun her kiteboarding journey 15 years ago at SurfSpot in Hua Hin, Benyapa Jantawan, nicknamed “Fawn,” triumphed at the Games despite a challenging time both on and off the water.

Her victory is all the more impressive, considering she had been grappling with injuries from a non-stop competition schedule throughout the year.

“I was so happy I won the silver medal at the Asian Games,” Fawn said, rightfully proud of her achievement. Despite the physical challenges, she credits her mental fortitude for her triumph: “Mind over matter, to push myself.”

This tenacity not only earned her a silver medal but also a coveted ticket to the 2024 Olympics scheduled for next July in Paris.

Fawn competes in Formula Kite, an exhilarating race around a course on water where the conditions can be treacherous, posing a significant risk of injury.

Recalling her initial days, she said, “I just gave kiteboarding a try and went on a three day course at SurfSpot Hua Hin. I found it really good fun and started practicing more during my days off from work.”

Fawn later participated in the Intercontinental PKRA event on Hua Hin beach in 2008, entering merely to experience the competition.

Notably, kiteboarding has been more than just a sport for her. “Before, when I worked, I used to get bad migraines that required medication. But after kiteboarding, I no longer get migraines. I love the sport; it gives me a sense of freedom and love for the outdoors,” Fawn expressed.

Her expertise doesn’t stop there. Fawn was among the pioneers in Thailand to use a hydrofoil board. She even made history as the first woman to go from Pattaya to Hua Hin across the Gulf of Thailand on a kiteboard.

Now competing around the world, Fawn’s talent has taken her to destinations like Oman, Qatar, the USA, and various European countries. To maintain her peak performance, she adheres to a rigorous training regimen, both on water and in the gym, involving weightlifting, Crossfit, and cardio.

Her dedication to the sport has even led her to gain weight, from 55kg to an intended 70kg, focusing on a protein-rich diet in order to build muscle and strength.

Kiteboarding’s popularity in Hua Hin can’t be understated.

The beach is a sought-after destination for the sport, offering perfect conditions, especially during the season which begins around November or early December. By April or May, the conditions are particularly ideal in the afternoons.

Athletes from around Asia including countries such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Korea and Japan use Hua Hin as a training base during the kiteboarding season.

“Hua Hin has everything you could want if you like kiteboarding,” Fawn said. “The conditions are ideal, and the town has excellent facilities. Plus, the cost of living is relatively low compared to other destinations.”

As she looks forward to the Olympics, Fawn’s vision extends beyond her personal aspirations.

She hopes to inspire more women to take up kiteboarding and is ready to support them in their journey.

The Tamarind Ballroom of the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort hosted the Hua Hin Wine Expo 2023 on Friday (Nov 3).

The highly anticipated event, which was organised by John C Murphy and Punyisa Chalauysophon, was inaugurated by Mr. Pornthep Wisootwat-tanasak, advisor to the Minister of the Interior, marked a significant gathering of wine lovers and aficionados from Hua Hin and across Thailand.

Key figures at the event included Mr. Archawan Kongkanant, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan Office, and industry expert Mr. Suppached Sasomsin, head winemaker at Siam Winery Co., Ltd. They were joined by Chef Noppadol Nuchcharoen, a consultant for the Cha-Am-Hua Hin Chefs Association.

Mr. Pornthep Wisootwat-tanasak, advisor to the Minister of the Interior

Mr. Pornthep Wisootwat-tanasak, advisor to the Minister of Interior, delivered an opening address highlighting the significance of such events in boosting tourism in the region.

His sentiments were echoed by Mr. Archawan who spoke of the event’s role in bolstering tourism and the local economy.

The TAT director urged events of this nature to be held annually and encouraged wine lovers to visit Hua Hin.

Mr. Archawan also reflected on the significance of the event in creating sustainable tourism in Hua Hin, highlighting its potential to attract the discerning millennial market and amplify tourism trends such as longer stays and increased spending. This aligns with the strategic visions of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the TAT.

Mr. Suppached Sasomsin, lead winemaker at Siam Winery, gave insights into the intricate world of winemaking in Thailand.

Meanwhile Ms. Wassana Srikanchana, President of the Hua Hin-Cha Am Tourism Business Association, emphasized the Expo’s dual aim: to propel Prachuap Khiri Khan’s tourism and to open new business channels for local service industries.

The event, which was also supported by Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Coast Riviera Club, alongside media partners Hua Hin Today and Surf FM, was split into two sessions: day and evening.

Cha-Am Hua Hin Chefs Club Thailand

The day session catered to industry professionals, providing a space for networking and knowledge exchange.

A highlight of the day session was the culinary presentation by Chef Noppadol Nuchcharoen alongside the Cha-Am Hua Hin Chefs Club Thailand.

In a demonstration that really showcased local ingredients and flavours, the chefs introduced Pineapple Fried Rice Three Bays, a dish that redefines the traditional by infusing it with a sense of place and the freshest local produce.

This new take on pineapple fried rice, featuring succulent seafood caught from the Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan, left the attendees commenting on its unique flavors and innovative approach. It is hoped that in highlighting the dish, it will become a springboard for Pineapple Fried Rice Three Bays to be known as a signature dish of the whole region.

However, the spotlight shone brightly during the evening when the event opened its doors to the public. Over 200 enthusiasts, including both locals and international visitors, mingled, tasting a curated selection of over 120 wine labels presented by 21 importers.

The Hua Hin Wine Expo not only celebrated the region’s wine culture but also contributed to a noble cause. Proceeds from a prize draw in the evening were dedicated to supporting the Chiew Kuang School in Kuiburi.

Hua Hin Health Park, an innovative and multipurpose health facility, is nearing its final stages of construction.

Set to open its doors in the Hin Lek Fai area this December, the Health Park is conveniently located near the Hua Hin International School and Black Mountain Golf Course.

Adam Clark, Project Financial Lead at ARRO Developments, currently with Misthos Group, who is overseeing the project, shared insights into the development and the ethos behind it. “I am really pleased after over a year of planning to see the project come to fruition,” he said.

“We’ve had incredible support from the local community, and it’s been a collective effort. Most of the workers and all of the businesses we’ve partnered with are local. This is truly a Hua Hin initiative.”

Designed to be a one-stop destination for various needs, Hua Hin Health Park is unique in its offering of both health services and retail outlets. The Health Park will house the Spine Clinic and the Be Well Medical Center, catering to the medical needs of its visitors.

There will be a pharmacy initially available through the Be Well facility, while Spine Clinic will also offer a range of sports equipment and nutrition.

Additionally, the retail and food & beverage aspect of the Health Park is just as promising.

Daddy Deli will be running a location within the facility, offering a cafĂŠ-style restaurant open from early morning, as well as a retail area where customers can purchase a variety of products ranging from cold cuts and cheeses to bread and desserts. They will also be offering ready grab and go meals and a wine shop.

“Daddy Deli’s presence is a game-changer, especially for parents doing the school run or anyone looking to grab a quick coffee and some fresh groceries in the morning. It’s all about adding ease to the daily routines of our community,” Adam said.

Meanwhile, John Laroche’s Junior Asian Golf Academy (JAGA) will also have an office in the facility.

Looking forward, the second floor of the facility is earmarked for development into office space in the first or second quarter of the next year, with small businesses already expressing interest.

“We’re open to inquiries, and it’s exciting to see the interest from the business community,” Adam mentioned.

The third phase of the project includes the potential addition of a third building to cater to further demand from retail and medical services.

With the construction set to be completed by mid-November, and the facility opening its doors on December 4, Hua Hin Health Park is poised to be a vibrant and essential addition to the local community. The park will also feature 25 car parking spaces and ATMs for added convenience.

“It’s all about creating a safe, traffic-free, and natural surrounding facility where people can fulfill their health, retail, and food & beverage needs all in one place. We’re proud to be a part of this community and to contribute to its wellness and convenience,” Adam explained.

It’s not every day that a young talent from Cha-am or Hua Hin gets to share screen space with Hollywood bigwigs like John David Washington and Gemma Chan. But for 10-year-old Harrison Phillips, this is exactly what has happened.

In the new American science fiction film “The Creator,” an epic tale set in a future where humans battle advanced AI, the pivotal role of a child AI weapon was deftly handled by Harrison, who was as a stunt and body double.

The plot, which centers around an ex-special forces agent tasked to hunt down the AI’s elusive architect, took filming crews all over Thailand and concluded in London’s famed Pinewood studios.

Harrison, who is half British and half Thai, moved to Cha-am, near Palm Hills, with his family in March 2021. An avid footballer for Hua Hin City and a student at Sarasas Witead-on-Sea School, Harrison’s entry into the movie world was anything but traditional.

His father, David Phillips, told Hua Hin Today via email, “Harrison got involved in this film in a pretty unconventional way I would say. We responded to an ad seeking a mixed-race child actor and sent in his pictures.” From being among the 50 kids at the first audition at Bangkok’s Column Hotel to being one of the ten finalists, the Phillips family then received the good news on Boxing Day, and by mid-January, Harrison was filming in Samut Prakan.

“For us, shifting from the UK to Thailand was a monumental decision,” David said.

“Seeing Harrison transition smoothly and then land the role in the movie was a very proud moment for me personally.”

The movie has garnered huge attention in Thailand given that it was filmed in multiple locations across the country, including Bangkok, Phitsanulok, Krabi, Phuket, Ubon Ratchathani, Pattaya (Sanctuary of Truth), Sangklaburi, Kanchanaburi, Chang Dao, and then finished off in Pinewood studios in London in May 2022.

The film’s release further underscores Thailand’s emerging presence in global cinema, in particular as a filming location.

David said he hopes that Harrison will continue acting and land more roles in the future, but for now just wants him to experience the simple joys of being a kid.

When asked about some of his favorite memories of filming The Creator, Harrison said: “Playing football with John David Washington in Chang Dao surrounded by mountains was unforgettable,” he said.

“Working with him and Gemma Chan was amazing. They even got me gifts on our last day in London and it was sad to say goodbye to them.”

Harrison on the set of The Creator

Harrison also shared his admiration for director Gareth Edwards. “Meeting all the amazing people, including Gareth, who was very kind to me, was the best part about filming.”

However, every journey has its challenges. For Harrison, it was the extended periods away from his mother and sister.

As for the future, Harrison is looking forward to more roles in the industry.

“This was my first acting role and I feel very lucky to have been a part of this amazing production. I do want to do more in the future but whatever happens I will remember this forever.

“The Creator,” which hit theaters on September 29, is now being showcased across movie screens in Thailand.

This was a real eye opener into the quality of Thai cheeses

Monsoon Valley Wine Bar in Hua Hin played host to a pretty special culinary event on Thursday (Oct 5).

This was a cheese and wine pairing very much made in Thailand.

It was also the latest in a series of ‘foodie’ events hosted by Monsoon Valley Wine Bar.

There’s an argument to say that Guido Campigotto, Monsoon Valley’s general manager of F&B and his team are doing more to showcase locally produced food than anyone else in Hua Hin at the moment.

That’s not to say that others aren’t showcasing local products, but Monsoon Valley has regularly put on events where local or Thai produced products take centre stage – be that locally produced smoked salmon, pasta, chocolate, cold cuts and more.

This event, however, saw the lead act come from a bit further afield than Hua Hin, for it was the turn of the exquisite cheese offerings from Chiang Mai’s Jartisann Cheeserie to take centre stage.

Jarutat “Jart” Snidwongse Na Ayuthaya, the mastermind behind Jartisann Cheeserie and widely regarded as Thailand’s premier cheese maker, showcased his excellent cheese.

The idea of cheese from Thailand may cause some to raise their eyebrows, given that the Land of Smiles isn’t traditionally known for cheese.

However, thanks to passion-fuelled people like Jart and his wife Ann, Thailand’s cheese scene is gaining both traction and acclaim.

Jart’s cheese bursts with flavour and are whipped up from original recipes penned down by Jart himself. The assortment of cheese at Jartisann is not only diverse but also carries hints of Thai ingredients. The raw materials, such as cow milk, are all locally sourced from the verdant mountains and valleys of Chiang Mai.

This emphasis on local ingredients not only assures quality but also showcases Jart’s commitment to promoting the Thai economy and minimizing carbon footprints.

Jart’s journey into cheese making has been both eclectic and inspiring.

Formerly a monk, he later delved into experimenting with smoked food. His journey into cheesemaking came when he sought his ‘lightbulb’ moment. With no formal training or mentor, Jart turned to varied resources – books, YouTube, visits to European cheeseries – to master the craft.

His rationale for choosing Chiang Mai? The region boasts of Thailand’s best quality cow’s milk, which for Jart translates to better flavor.

Jart said his mindset has been that of a Michelin star chef in their ability to turn a cheap piece of steak into something exceptional.

The cheeses on show were really excellent but some personal highlights included “Hidden Agenda”, a soft cow cheese with a complex flavor; “Saltara Ferari”, a semi-soft cow cheese packed with savoriness; and the “Ricotta Affumicata Tejo-Matura”, a delightful mix of buffalo milk’s creaminess with chili peppers’ zing and raisins’ sweetness.

Jart said that Thailand is capable of producing cheese on par with others.

His goal, as he highlighted, is to make Thai cheese a first choice for locals within the next five years, reducing the need for imports. For cheese enthusiasts, his message was clear: “If you enjoy cheese, you can enjoy it right here in Thailand.”

To round off the event, the culinary team from Monsoon Valley Wine Bar served up a dish that embodied the evening: angel hair pasta with a delicious sauce made with Jartisann’s truffle cheese.

Nature lovers and adventure seekers near Hua Hin have a reason to be excited.

The stunning Khao Lom Muak viewpoint, renowned for its breathtaking views of Ao Manao and the surrounding area, will be accessible to the public on select dates later this month.

Khao Lom Muak is only open to the public on long weekends or national holidays.

Military officials have announced that the popular (and at times challenging) hiking destination will be open on October 13-15 and again on October 21-23.

Hiking to Khao Lom Muak’s summit, which stands at 902ft, is not for the faint-hearted.

The journey requires climbers to conquer 496 steps, and the ascent can take anywhere from one to two hours. While the trail begins relatively gently, its difficulty increases the closer you get to the summit. At certain points you will need to use ropes to help hoist you up.

However, military personnel from the adjacent Wing 5 military base, who supervise the entire trail. They are available to provide aid to hikers in need, ensuring safety and guidance during the trek.

In a shift from past practice, prospective hikers no longer need to register in advance for the climb. Instead, on-the-day registration will be available between 06.00 and 10.00 hrs, simplifying the process and making it more accessible to spontaneous adventurers.

For those coming from Hua Hin’s central areas, the drive to Khao Lom Muak takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Prachuap Khiri Khan is a cyclist’s paradise and is well known for being one of the most popular cycling destinations in Thailand.

From its base in Khao Takiab, Hua Hin Bike Tours has been championing cycling and cycle tours in the region for well over a decade.

Regarded as one of Thailand’s premier bicycle touring companies, they offer the opportunity for locals and tourists to explore the picturesque landscapes of Prachuap Khiri Khan and the broader Thai coastline on two wheels.

Chris Byrd, the founder of Hua Hin Bike Tours, which is part of The Adventure Cycling (Thailand) Company, has carved a niche for his unique venture in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s vast landscape.

“I started out with the idea of riding my bicycle across Thailand and I thought that if I’m going to do something that big, I should do it for a worthy cause,” Chris shared in a recent interview with Hua Hin Today.

Chris’s journey from a casual cyclist in his younger days enjoying rides with his father to establishing a premier bicycle touring company is a testament to his passion and dedication.

Although he took a break from cycling during his tenure in the military and as a wine salesman, a sponsored cycling event in America reignited his love for the sport. It was a 500-kilometer event sponsored by Tanqueray gin. “I loved it. So, I signed up for four years in a row,” Chris said.

The subsequent move to Thailand and a successful 3,200 KM solo bicycle journey for charity changed the trajectory of his life. Chris’s feat was covered extensively by Thai media, from newspapers to TV channels. “I raised like 10,000 US dollars my first year and rode for 23 days. That was 2003, 20 years ago,” he reminisced.

The overwhelming interest in his charity rides propelled him to turn his passion project into a business. “I had made a little bit of money, saved and thought I wanted to see Thailand. And then I came up with the idea of raising money for charity,” Chris mentioned.

Chris’s company was hired by an Australian based charity helping Thai children here in Thailand, and they wanted him to conduct charity rides for them. “So we started out with one tour and then that doubled, and that doubled, and so on. Up until last year, we were doing five to ten charity rides a year for them. We made quite a name for ourselves,” he added.

It wasn’t long before Hua Hin, with its sea views, seafood, and tranquil roads, became the perfect hub for his growing venture. Chris explained, “Prachuap Khiri Khan was always my favourite province to cycle in. We were able to take over an existing cycle business and just went from there.”

Today, Hua Hin Bike Tours boasts a range of offerings, from self-guided tours with GPS-loaded routes to specialized “supported tours” ensuring utmost safety. Chris, a certified safety instructor, emphasized the meticulous safety measures they undertake. “When I’m out on a tour, I’m monitoring the situation intensely. We keep to smaller roads and ensure our support vehicles stay a safe distance behind us,” he said.

For groups, Hua Hin Bike Tours offers flexibility. “Our day tours are limited to 10 or 12 people who don’t know each other. But if you’re keen on an organized bicycle ride, we can accommodate over 100 participants. We’d just need a little advance notice to ensure we have enough bikes ready. Presently, we have 75 bikes at our disposal,” he stated.

For those looking for recommendations, Chris suggested a scenic tour to Dolphin Bay in Sam Roi Yot. “Our number one tour offers nice scenery around Sam Roi Yot National Park. Along the way, we have various stops for ice-cold watermelon and pineapple. And we have a really nice seafood lunch,” he elaborated.

Chris recommends another scenic cycling spot towards Prachuap town and the Wing 5 military base. “We cycle by the dusky langur monkeys. They’re gentle and not like the macaques. The sea views on this route are incredible – it’s one of my favourite tours. It’s truly a beautiful experience,” he shared.

In addition to the tours, Chris is excited about the upcoming Tour de Thailand, a charity ride that spans from November 19 to December 1. The tour covers multiple cities, including Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Pranburi and then further south. “It’s 72,500 THB for the ride, which includes everything, bicycle, meals, and a stay in nice hotels.” Chris stated.

Furthermore, every first Saturday of the month, cycling enthusiasts can gather at the Hua Hin Bike Tours office in Khao Takiab for a bicycle flea market. Chris added, “We also offer a small language class where we teach people the Thai words for different bicycle parts.”

As Hua Hin Bike Tours continues to champion cycling in Thailand, it’s a reminder of the endless adventures that await on the roads throughout Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Patrick Jacobs, renowned for capturing stunning images of Hua Hin and the surrounding area, has recently released his 2024 calendar.

Each year Patrick produces a calendar of his photographs of Hua Hin, some of the proceeds of which are donated to different charities.

“The calendar is about feeling,” Patrick explained. “For instance, there’s a photo that would remind someone of winter in Europe and another celebrating the festive mood at year’s end with fireworks. Most images are from Hua Hin, with a few from Bangkok.”

Selecting photographs for the calendar is a heart-led process for Patrick. “I always choose my favorites,” he shared.

Patrick begins with a compilation of around 30 to 40 potential images, stored throughout the year in a special folder on his computer. From there, he undergoes a process of elimination, assigning images to specific months.

Image: Patrick Jacobs

Apart from being a visual treat, Patrick’s calendar will again carry a charitable aspect. A portion of the proceeds, amounting to 25,000 THB, will benefit the Hua Hin Heroes foundation.

Patrick said he’s motivated by the foundation’s endeavors and sees his art as a means to contribute. “I live a good life and believe that if you can support a good cause with just taking pictures, why not?”

In addition to his 2024 calendar, Patrick is set to release a new photographic book in November titled Hua Hin: A Coastal Canvas in Pictures. The book, priced at 1,700 THB, is expected to generate 50,000 THB for charity. It consists of over 200 images, segregated into 15 chapters, each highlighting unique facets of Hua Hin.

“People often approached me for a book on Hua Hin after my previous one on local fishermen. I didn’t want it to be a tourist book,” he emphasized. “For me, it’s about having pleasure in capturing moments. When people see an image, I hope they recall a memory or get curious about visiting the location.”

Patrick’s commitment to sharing images of Hua Hin extends beyond print.

In the coming months he will also hold two upcoming exhibitions at The Standard, Hua Hin. Scheduled for 10-12 November and 15-17 December, the exhibits target both the local expats and incoming tourists. Unlike his last exhibition, which featured photos on aluminum, Patrick plans to use canvas this time, allowing for more flexibility in size.

Patrick, who shares many of his photographs on the Foto’s by Patrick Patrick Facebook page, which now has more than 6,000 followers, spoke of his fondness for Hua Hin.

“I’ve been here for 15 years, and it feels good every time I return. The diverse cultures, nationalities, and incredible food make it special.”

Image: Patrick Jacobs

He said he visits the beach almost every day to take photographs with either his camera or smartphone.

As for the future, Patrick dreams of another book, this time documenting the lives of fishermen across Thailand. “I’ve visited boat yards and captured unique fishing practices,” he said. “I envision a book that showcases fishermen on the Mekong, drying fish on the river banks, and other local nuances. But, it will take time.”

The 2024 calendar is available now and is priced at 450 THB.

For those in search of an alternative to the beaches of Hua Hin, the Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf in Hin Lek Fai is a really nice and welcoming place that is well worth checking out.

Opened in 2021, this fun-filled destination is capturing the hearts of families, tourists, and golf enthusiasts alike.

Operated by Lilly Zhang and Dave Faulks, the Sunflower Café & Mini Golf emerged as a bright idea when Dave found himself ‘stranded’ in Hua Hin for an extended period during the pandemic.

While Hua Hin boasts more than its fair share of excellent golf courses, crazy or mini golf courses are few and far between. In fact, we don’t know of a single one in Hua Hin, until now.

Whether you are a golf enthusiast or not, it doesn’t really matter.

For the uninitiated, crazy golf, also popularly known as mini golf, is a scaled-down version of the traditional golf game. Instead of vast fairways and challenging terrains found in standard golf, mini golf courses are compact, often designed with whimsical obstacles, playful themes, and varied elevations – all of which are found at Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf.

The game’s objective remains the same: to get the ball into the hole using the fewest strokes possible. However, the challenges lie in navigating around obstacles.

At Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf, people of all ages are in for a treat with a 9-hole course that boasts of imaginative designs, including challenges like a loop-the-loop, a guitar-shaped hole, a love heart, and a double hole.

Notably, the 9th hole proudly features a sunflower design, lending the course its distinctive name. Dave continues to pour his time and effort into the course, frequently upgrading it to enhance the playing experience.

Yet, the appeal of the Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf extends beyond the greens.

Tourists from various nations, including Thailand, the UK, New Zealand, and the USA, are initially drawn to the course to try their hand at mini golf but inevitably stay or visit again because of Lilly and Dave’s warm hospitality. They make you feel really welcome.

Many discover this gem through Google or Facebook and end up spending their day indulging in multiple rounds of mini-golf, in between breaks at the cafe.

Managed by Lilly, who is an excellent cook and baker, the cafe serves delicious homemade treats. From the must try lemon cheesecake and apple pie to the chocolate brownies, the offerings are becoming favorites among the visitors.

“We just want people to come and enjoy themselves. If they are having a good time then we are happy. It’s a nice alternative to the beach,” Dave said.

And this sentiment would seem to resonate with the growing number of people who appreciate the venue’s relaxed atmosphere and engaging activities.

Open every day from 10:30am to 5:30pm, except Tuesdays, the course encourages appointments, easily booked via their Facebook page.

At 120THB per person and free entry for kids under 8, it’s great value. A game typically takes a group of four around 40 minutes, with afternoons post-lunch recommended when the course is a little more shaded.

There is also ample parking for visitors and despite being located about 20 kms out of town, it’s a simple drive whether you’re travelling from Hin Lek Fai or the town centre.

In the coming weeks the Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf is set to host a music night, as well a cake buffet priced at 299THB, promising excellent value.

For residents and tourists in Hua Hin, Sunflower CafĂŠ & Mini Golf offers a really nice mix of fun and entertainment, which is suitable for people of all ages.

For those of you living in Hua Hin a decade ago, you’ll know there were just a couple of places selling what was a fairly limited, not to mention expensive, variety of wine.

Fast forward to today and there are some really interesting things happening in Hua Hin in relation to wine.

From growing and cultivating to tasting and pairing – this place is becoming a hub of all things wine.

And don’t even think about rolling your eyes at the use of the word “hub”.

RELATED: Hua Hin Wine Expo set to dazzle this November

We’ll be the first to coin it – there’s a wine scene in Hua Hin and it is really growing.

And the best thing about Hua Hin’s wine scene is that such a broad range of people are enjoying it.

From connoisseurs and seasoned wine lovers to complete newbies who are just exploring different wines for the first time, there’s something for everyone and all budgets.

From just a handful of wine outlets, there are now over 20 wine retailers in Hua Hin.

As the town toasts to outlets like Italasia, Wine Bubble and Berry, and EU Wine, these and many of the others, offer an eclectic array of global wines.

Even supermarket chain Tops has inaugurated a dedicated wine outlet, catering to the burgeoning demand. Adding to this evolution is Monsoon Valley, the local vineyard, which has made strides in producing quality Thai wines.

Hua Hin Today recently sat down with Thierry Berno, the branch manager at Italasia Hua Hin, who is experiencing Hua Hin’s wine explosion first hand.

“My journey into the wine industry began in France, influenced by my father and driven by curiosity about the varying price ranges,” said Thierry. After stints in Korea and later Thailand’s hospitality sector, he returned to his passion – wines.

Noting the evolution in Hua Hin’s wine culture, Thierry highlighted data trends that show the town gradually embracing higher quality wines. “While the market in Hua Hin is price-sensitive, there’s been a definite shift toward better quality wine over the years,” he observed.

For the curious, Primitivo seems to be the crowd-pleaser, but it’s the unbiased nature of Thai wine consumers that stands out. “Thai buyers don’t hold regional biases. If they think a wine from Chile or Argentina is good, they go for it. It’s a refreshing perspective compared to some European buyers who can be more particular about origin,” Thierry added.

Hua Hin’s residents have displayed varying tastes, gravitating towards Primitivo for its easy-drinking attributes and Veneto wines, which can pack more of a punch.

Thierry further shed light on the evolving tastes, highlighting the popularity of Pinot Grigio and the changing perspectives on Chardonnay.

But what’s the future for Hua Hin’s burgeoning wine scene?

Thierry nods enthusiastically to more collaborative wine-tasting events.

“We aim to partner with our local restaurants to craft enriching experiences,” he revealed.

“Because, at the end of the day, it’s all about the experience.”

A parallel narrative emerging alongside the wine trend is the growth of the town’s hospitality scene.

“The wine and hospitality industries are deeply intertwined,” Thierry points out.

“Restaurants like Little Spain and Prime (and there are plenty of others) have elevated the dining experience in Hua Hin, driving the demand for fine wines.”

“People in Hua Hin now prioritize the experience,” he stated, emphasizing the integral role of restaurants in enriching these wine experiences.”

“The wine scene cannot grow without the hospitality scene. Most of the time, hospitality leads, and wine naturally follows,” he explained, reflecting on the growth in Hua Hin’s hospitality offerings.

For newcomers eager to navigate Hua Hin’s wine landscape, Thierry’s advice is straightforward: trust the professionals.

“There’s so many shops now in Hua Hin selling a wide range of wines. I think most of those shops are going to have a professional person in there to recommend wine, so if you are a beginner just follow their recommendations. Go and just tell them more or less what you’re looking for and let them surprise you a little bit.”

The second part of our feature on sports tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan focuses on economic contributions, infrastructure, future plans, and the impact of this emerging industry on local businesses and communities.

Hua Hin and the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan has quickly emerged as a hotspot for sports tourism. Events like the WTA Thailand Open 2023 and World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony, coupled with numerous marathons, golf tournaments, and beach sports, have spotlighted the area’s growing prowess in this tourism sector. The revenue generated by sports tourism in this province is substantial, with sport tourists spending an impressive 3-4 times more per person than average tourists.

In an exclusive interview with Mr. Archawan Kongkanant, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan office, we delved into the details of sports tourism’s importance to the region.

Economic contributions and infrastructure

According to Mr. Archawan, the rise of sports tourism has played a significant role in the province’s economic prosperity. Hosting national, regional, and international sporting events and tourism activities has led to an increase in overall income, long-term income generation, and the creation of numerous jobs.

“We’ve seen the economic opportunities and the distribution of income spread across various districts in Prachuap Khiri Khan,” says Mr. Archawan. “Athletes, participants, and spectators alike are choosing to stay at local hotels, stimulating economic activity for local business owners.”

RELATED: What is sports tourism and why is it a key driver for Prachuap Khiri Khan’s tourism sector?

A part of this growth can be attributed to the development of facilities for participants. Infrastructure for sporting events and other attractions has been significantly expanded. After a race or event, these developments transform into lasting facilities for tourism, benefiting locals and future visitors alike.

However, Mr. Archawan emphasized the need for further improvements. “The design of the sports stadium area, access to tourist destinations, and accommodation for elderly and disabled visitors are all crucial and need further development,” he said.

The future of sports tourism

When asked about the future of sports tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Mr. Archawan was optimistic. “Our focus is on high-value tourism, providing customers with happiness and satisfaction through participation in sports tourism activities,” he said.
He views sports tourism as a cornerstone for the development of travel experiences that add value to visitors’ experiences.

Several factors contribute to the province’s bright future in sports tourism. Among them are the variety of natural tourism resources, readiness of land, sea, and air transportation systems, quality standards for event venues, and the growth in the number of hotels and rooms.

Looking ahead, the province plans to diversify travel experiences to accommodate various preferences and needs. One notable aspect of this is the opening of the double-track train from Bangkok to Chumphon through Prachuap Khiri Khan, which will help to make the region more accessible. Expansion of eateries, coffee shops, and bakeries also hints at a new beginning for start-up business owners.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Prachuap Khiri Khan Office is designing the promotion of sports tourism, drawing sports travelers, admirers, and followers to the region.

Demographics and spending power

The sports tourism industry in Prachuap Khiri Khan supports local business owners and other industries both directly and indirectly. With spending and economic growth tied intrinsically to sports tourism, the influx of sports tourists often translates into a lucrative opportunity for local businesses, especially those dealing with lodging, dining, and travel agencies.

The types of sporting activities popular in the region are also quite diverse, including golf, canoeing, yoga, fishing, skating, surfing, and triathlon competitions. Such variety further enhances the region’s appeal for tourists with different sporting interests.

Sports tourism is not just a passing trend for Prachuap Khiri Khan.

It is a thriving and multifaceted aspect of tourism that has bolstered the local economy, enriched community life, and paved the way for a sustainable and promising future.

The region is now considered one of Thailand’s prime destinations for sports tourism.

A new initiative to boost Prachuap Khiri Khan’s tourism prospects is underway.

Hua Hin Today has been tasked with sharing a questionnaire that aims to understand the travel preferences of both Thais and foreigners regarding potential new flight routes to and from Hua Hin Airport.

The move is part of the provincial administration’s broader strategy to revitalize tourism in Prachuap Khiri Khan and redevelop and upgrade Hua Hin Airport.

By gauging demand for specific flight routes, the airport aims to optimize travel times and enhance convenience for tourists visiting the province.

Participation in the questionnaire is completely anonymous, ensuring that respondents can provide their feedback without any reservations.

The insights gathered will contribute to the provincial administration’s working group dedicated to the progression of tourism in the region. The primary goal is to tailor transportation development, particularly in aviation, to meet the exact needs and preferences of tourists.

Residents and frequent travelers to Prachuap Khiri Khan are encouraged to voice their opinions and help shape the future of tourism in the area. As Hua Hin Airport looks to expand its connectivity and services, this questionnaire serves as a step in aligning its offerings with the needs of its diverse clientele.

You really need to try it for yourself…

While many of us enjoy eating seafood on the beach or sampling something tasty from the night market, for those of us who live here or are perhaps a frequent visitor, you will know that there is much more to Hua Hin’s culinary landscape than that.

Beneath the touristy veneer lies a vibrant community of passionate food artisans and producers, offering everything from smoked and cured salmon to locally-made chocolates, fresh pasta, artisanal breads, liquors and spirits and more.

Joining this group of local producers is Baan Fostier, a name rapidly becoming synonymous with the very best charcuterie available in the region.

Baan Fostier. Image: Patrick Jacobs

Managed by the multifaceted Thierry Fostier and his wife, Wannapra, this small artisanal establishment takes the age-old tradition of meat curing to new heights.

Thierry, who previously made his mark with Maison Fostier in Bangkok, decided to retire for the peace and quiet of Hua Hin. But retirement, in the conventional sense, was not on the cards for him.

“I’ve always believed in keeping occupied,” he remarks, hinting at a career that spanned from tattoo artistry and motorcycle accessories to jewellery creation. An avid photographer too, Thierry’s passion for creation seamlessly translated into his latest venture.

Transforming a portion of his house in Hin Lek Fair into a charcuterie, Baan Fostier boasts exceptional quality meats – be it pork, beef, lamb and duck.

With a daily production of around 20 kilograms, Baan Fostier has carved a niche by supplying a handful of hotels and eateries in the vicinity with their great tasting produce. For those lucky enough to sample, the saucisson flavored with hints of fennel & aniseed, the richness of cashew and the subtle spiciness of green pepper, or the delightful saucisson with figs, testify to Baan Fostier’s commitment to quality.

Thierry Fostier. Image: Patrick Jacobs

“It’s about bringing the same level or even surpassing the quality available in Bangkok to Hua Hin,” Thierry told Hua Hin Today.

The products, handcrafted with care, not only brim with rich flavors and textures but are also emblematic of artisanal traditions.

The underpinning of Baan Fostier’s success lies in its unwavering dedication to sustainability and ethical sourcing.

“It’s very important to source local ingredients. All our herbs and spices come directly from Thailand,” Thierry said.

Pork from Ratchaburi, beef sourced from Cha-am or Khao Yai, and salt from Samut Songkram ensures the produce is made with a distinctly Thai touch. Collaborations with Thai cheese makers are evident in their use of brie and Camembert, while figs are sourced from Farm-A-Jarn in Hua Hin. “The basil, we grow ourselves,” adds Thierry.

However, pioneering such a venture in Hua Hin hasn’t been without challenges.

The climate, particularly the humidity, presents its own set of intricacies when producing charcuterie.

Image: Patrick Jacobs

For Thierry, the heart of this endeavor lies in the community. Drawing a parallel between Hua Hin and Corfu, he reflects on the sense of solidarity and closeness here.

“It’s a small, close-knit community, but there’s a real sense of unity,” he shares.

For those keen to sample the products from Baan Fostier, the artisan charcuterief is nestled in the Hin Lek Fai area of Hua Hin. While they operate strictly by appointment, more information is available on their Facebook page.

Prachuap Khiri Khan now has a new official dish, which even some locals are admitting they’ve never heard of.

Last week, the Department of Cultural Promotion announced a new promotional campaign that aimed to officially recognise one dish from each province in Thailand.

The “1 Province 1 Dish – Promoting Local Cuisine” campaign [Thai], spotlighting dishes across Thailand that resonate with local culture and history.

Under the banner Thailand Best Local Food – Taste… The Lost Taste, the campaign also aimed to highlight the history of Thai food and local regional cuisine while also emphasizing the importance of Thai herbs, their diverse properties, and the generational wisdom that accompanies them.

Gaeng Kua Som Nor Tub Lue Si Gub Pla Chon Yang (แกงคั่วส้มหน่อธูปฤาษีกับปลาช่อนย่าง) or snakehead fish and cattail shoot curry.

In addition, the initiative seeks to bolster cultural networks, promoting sustainable management of cultural works grounded in local heritage and insight.

However, the dish for Prachuap Khiri Khan caught many people by surprise, particularly from locals commenting on social media.

The name of the dish is Gaeng Kua Som Nor Tub Lue Si Gub Pla Chon Yang (แกงคั่วส้มหน่อธูปฤาษีกับปลาช่อนย่าง), which roughly translated to Thai is snakehead fish and cattail shoot curry – and it’s now the official dish of Prachuap Khiri Khan

While the announcement stirred intrigue and enthusiasm, many online commentators confessed unfamiliarity with the dish, with some saying they had never heard of it and had no idea where they could sample it.

Hua Hin Today’s investigation revealed that the origins of this lesser-known dish can be traced back to the Sam Roi Yot District.

Key ingredients in the curry include snakehead fish, shallots, dried chilies, shrimp paste, tamarind paste, sugar, and coconut milk. Described as spicy yet not overwhelmingly so, the dish perfectly captures the quintessence of Thai cuisine in that it is salty, sweet, spicy and sour.

Snakehead fish, recognized for its white, succulent flesh and culinary versatility, holds significant economic importance in Thailand. As for the cattail shoots (Typha angustifolia), they flourish in the freshwater lake of Sam Roi Yot, hinting at the dish’s regional authenticity.

Our team sampled this distinctive dish at the Lungcha Homestay in Sam Roi Yot.
