Let us pause from Covid-19 for a moment to discuss a topic that would surely get attention from many ladies. Do you want to know what to drink and eat to get beautiful glowing skin?

If your answer is yes, then let’s go! – Water: Drinking water is the best nourishment for your skin because it helps moisturize and keep your skin hydrated. Also, it helps stimulate body cells’ functions in absorbing food, getting rid of wastes in your body, and improving blood circulation.

Coenzyme Q10, (CoQ10), plays a vital role in being an antioxidant.
L-Cysteine helps enhance the strength of your body.

It helps to stimulate the building blocks of powerful antioxidants, glutathione, and other enzymes. So, the body has higher resistance toward bacteria and viruses, making the symptoms of various infectious diseases disappear more quickly.

Amla extract is high in vitamin C. It acts as an antioxidant that helps slow down the degeneration of skin cells and inhibits melanin formation. It also helps increase the functionality of L-Cysteine that maintains the body’s glutathione level.
Selenium helps protect the skin from free radicals, which cause skin dehydration, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and sunburn, including skin cancers.
Zinc helps repair skin damage while keeping it moist and hydrated. It is a component in the sebaceous glands’ function that produces oil directly for the skin. Therefore, a lack of zinc may cause oily skin.
Follinol is primarily found in green tea. It could inhibit skin inflammation or injury, treat acne, and help slow down the deterioration of DNA.
Phytoestrogens are substances that are primarily found in unprocessed food. It helps to balance hormones in the body and slow down premature skin ageing.
Vitamin A keeps your skin hydrated, protects it from sunlight, and even helps to lighten wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
Vitamin E is a nutrient that performs as an antioxidant in the body and helps protect the skin from any harm from sunlight. It also makes your skin look and feel healthy from the inside.
Vitamin C helps preserve Collagen and Elastin that is vital for skin tightening. It also protects your skin from sunlight while helping boost your body’s immune system. We could get all the nutrients mentioned above from eating food appropriately.

It is essential to eat nutritious food or all food from the five food groups, exercise constantly, and drink enough water. However, the most important thing is to get enough sleep.

No amount of nourishment and maintenance put into your body would be worth anything if you don’t give the cells time to repair and regenerate themselves. It would be like a machine that works all the time, never gets fixed when broken.

Thus, it would break down eventually. We hope you take good care of your health along with your skin.

WHO SUFFERS FROM HEADACHES?

Nearly everyone will suffer a headache at some point in time, headache is one of the most common reasons people seek medical help, and it’s the number one reason for patients to come to our clinic. Working as an acupuncturist encouraged me to look deeper at the causes of problems, often, more than one underlying cause contributes to each headache. In this part of the article, I will first discuss tension-type headache:

SYMPTOMS:

A tension headache is felt as pain, tightness, or pressure around the head, the pain is sometimes described as throbbing or aching and can affect the heads front, top, back, or side. A person feels pain in the neck, upper back, eyes, jaw, or other muscle groups in the body. It may also radiate from other areas like the shoulders or upper back.

CAUSES:

Muscle contractions can cause tension headaches, and these contractions can be caused by various foods, activities, stress, or some people develop tension headaches after staring at a computer screen for a long time. Cold temperatures may also trigger a tension headache, even hidden dental infections or TMJ can be significant enough to contribute to headaches.

HOW CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP?

Acupuncture can stimulate the nervous system to release natural painkillers, also, it helps relax the muscles. I will examine all the muscle groups that are involved in muscle tension as it is vital to identify, and correct, the ordinary everyday activities that are the source of muscle strain in the neck and shoulders, leading to a headache.

Maintaining good posture is essential, and another major factor is dehydration, many people do not drink enough water to hydrate their cells adequately. Muscles that do not get enough water ache more than well-hydrated muscles.
In the following article, I will discuss migraine headaches.

Cancer of the cervix is the second most common cancer in women. Some 14 Thai women die from this disease every day.

Most cervical cancer cases are caused by the infection of Human Papillomavirus, usually known as HPV, HPV types 16 and 18 are the two major HPV types that cause cervical cancer.

Risk factors that may cause women, no matter young or old, to get cervical cancer include:

  • Having sex at an early age
  • Having many sexual partners or have a partner who has had many sexual partners
  • Taking birth control pills for a long time (the risk is high if the period is more than five years)
  • Been pregnant and in labour more than four times
  • Has a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis, gonorrhea and herpes
  • Lack of regular cervical cancer screening

Cervical cancer is divided into four stages:

  • Stage 1 – The cancer cells have grown in the cervix area but is not spreading.
  • Stage 2 – Cancer grows beyond the cervix to surrounding areas, such as the upper part of the vagina, the tissues next to the cervix (called the parametria).
  • Stage 3 – Cancer has spread to the tissues nearby, such as the lower part of the vagina, lymph nodes, and the pelvis walls.
  • Stage 4 – Cancer has spread to the bladder, intestine, or outside the pelvic area to distant organs such as lungs, liver, or bones.

PREVENTION
Ensure cervical cancer screening at least once a year. Not changing sexual partners too often and use condoms. Get HPV vaccine to prevent the infection.

 CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING
The Cytology test or Pap (Papanicolaou) smear that tests cells from the cervix, which requires examination in the lithotomy position for vaginal examination. Urine testing for HPV is an innovation that has accuracy of up to 99 per cent. But this is not a replacement for Pap smear. It can be an alternative option for women who are afraid of feeling hurt or are too shy to be examined in the lithotomy position.

Insomnia remains one of the most common disorders encountered in my clinic experiences. Sleep difficulties and several primary sleep disorders increase in prevalence with age, frequently characterized by difficulty falling or maintaining sleep, frequent awakening, and early morning wakefulness.

In older adults, insomnia is most often associated with other conditions, such as ingestion of caffeine, alcohol consumption, sleep apnea, medical disorders, nocturia, anxiety, and depression.

Medications such as beta-blockers, glucocorticoids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, decongestants, and antiandrogens may be one of the factors contributing to insomnia.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), imbalances of the inner organs can cause deficiencies, leading to insomnia. The most common cause of insomnia is Liver Yin deficiency.

The liver metabolises essential hormones that regulate the sleep-wake cycle includes both melatonin and cortisol. In patients with hepatic insufficiency, melatonin clearance is slow, and melatonin levels are high during the daytime leading to melatonin secretion patterns with the peak of secretion being delayed.

Therefore, the sleep onset is delayed as well. Low cortisol levels are necessary for falling asleep. Cortisol begins its rapid rise after the first-morning awakening and continues. Cortisol in the blood is supposed to be cleared by the liver during the day and low at nighttime.

Elevated cortisol levels at night can cause difficulty falling asleep. Recent studies have found that acupuncture increases biochemical concentrations that benefit sleep. Chinese herbal medicine has a long and established history of treatment protocols for the relief of insomnia.

This includes everything from ancient writings to modern research. To be successful for the treatment, we have to go to the underlying causes as well. TCM is a non-invasive way of treating insomnia by using Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal, Cupping and Massage.

Also, I’d like to combine various disciplines that include everything from diet and exercise to mental conditioning and lifestyle changes to promote a good night’s sleep.

Research has found that oranges grown in Thailand are toxic as they are full of chemicals that are above safe levels for human consumption.

The Consumer Foundation and Oxfam of Thailand (OXFAM) both warn that Thai citrus contains hazardous chemical residue that exceeds the normal level of toxicity for humans. This affects human health and is harmful to the environment as well.

The Pesticide Warning Network reported that it found that one orange contains 55 types of chemicals, an average of 0.364 milligrams, which exceeds the Safety Standard (MRL) by 28 residual chemicals as a discharge that cannot be washed off.

Substance such as carbendazim can result to congenital and impaired fertility. Carbofuran is another characteristic that is toxic to the brain cells and sex hormones while the acetamiprid affects the brain and nervous system. The network reported that this result came from random testing of oranges sold in Thai supermarkets and 100 per cent of which were found contain toxic residues.

Ms Thanita Wongprasert, campaign officer of OXFAM Thailand introduced Orange Spike, a campaign to promote better awareness in consumers about chemical residues in oranges and mandarins grown here.

The campaign calls for farmers to stop the use toxic chemicals to enhance the growth or size of a crop. It urges supermarkets to start using effective product-tracing process to be able to monitor better where the safe oranges come from.

One effective tracing system is to use QR Code stickers pasted on the oranges that have been tested as toxic-free and organic. Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Thailand, Giuseppe Busini, said promoting sustainability towards healthy eating is a key policy strategy of the EU.

He said “Farm to Fork” and European Green Deal, introduced earlier this year, are vital policies to ensure healthy and environmentally friendly food management and increased organic agriculture production.

Ms Kingkorn Naritorakul Na Ayudhya, a representative of “Eat Change the World Network” and the BIOTHAI Foundation, said oranges and mandarins are a high-value industrial crop with a large supply chain and a big part of Thai agriculture.

Normally a seasonal crop grown four months the year from December to March, the high demand for the fruit throughout the year forces farmers to rely on crop chemicals to be able to produce enough to supply the market.

Ms Kingkorn said these different chemicals are used from planting seed and throughout all stages of growth until harvest. So chemicals have been absorbed in the roots, stem, skin and the pulp of the fruit. Pesticides are also sprayed every week in the year.

As buyers prefer large, smooth and shiny oranges, supermarkets buy these for their shelves. But consumers have the right to know where the fruits come from and that they are safe to eat, Ms Kingkorn said.

Orange Spike campaign urges the public to sign a petition at the website http://www. dearconsumers.com/th/petition to demand that supermarket put QR Code on the oranges to identify organic toxic-free oranges and mandarins.

The campaign aims to collect 20,000 signatures to pressure supermarkets to respond to consumer concerns about toxic oranges. For those of you who loves the fruit, just don’t be discouraged as yet because there are many farms nowadays that produces organic oranges and are not hard to find at all.

According to Dr Opass Puttacharoen, head of the Centre for Emerging Disease Clinic of Chulalongkorn Hospital has posted on his FB page ‘Opass Putcharoen’ saying that “every kilogram of body weight increases the risk of contracting Covid-19 disease as well.”

Most people think that the group with higher risk of contracting Covid-19 disease comes from the elderly, diabetic people or people with low immune system. That does not tell all the truth— undoubtedly, overweight people are also at high risk of contracting the disease.

The reason why obese people has a greater possibility of contracting Covid-19, is that their lungs work much less than normal people and the T cell of their immune system is less active, also another possibility of blood clots forming in the lungs, which can cause the respiratory system to malfunction.

With all the negative factors that occurs in the body, the higher the chance of the disease to become stronger. So even if you’re young, and you’re overweight, you are likely to contract the disease same as an older person.

In addition, Dr Opass provided several useful links and illustrations showing the graph is based on a study by the PNAS Journal in the UK, where people being hospitalised along with Covid patients, the index of their body mass multiply twice the age, and if your body mass index is more than 35 years old, that is almost two times higher than the average people.

By Dr. Kate Boonyakiat, DAOM, LAc. – Terra Acupuncture

Are you experiencing hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, joint pain, difficulty sleeping at night, mood swings? And you are in your forties? You may be approaching menopause.

These symptoms above are the top complaints in my clinical experiences and for the women seeking treatment nowadays. Menopause is not a disease, but rather the point in a woman’s life at which she is no longer fertile, and menstrual periods have ceased, occurring between the age of 48 – 55 years.

Every woman will go through menopause, and for each, the experience will be different. Some women can pass menopause with no problems, but many others and its symptoms can be challenging to manage.

Menopausal symptoms arise due to reduced estrogen secretion from the ovaries, leading to autonomic nervous system dysfunction, including hot flushes and sweats, emotional disorders, insomnia, fatigue, headache, dizziness, palpitations, formication, musculoskeletal pain, and genitourinary symptoms.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, menopause is associated with ‘kidney deficiency or dysfunction’ since, in TCM, the kidney is conceptualized as a system rather than an organ responsible for temperature, fertility and sterility, and fluid balance regulation.

Qi is also a TCM concept that refers to daily life activities, visceral function, and metabolism. Yin and Yang, two opposite, complementary, and inter-related components of matters in nature, ensure that every system functions smoothly through the balance of Qi and blood.

During this time, women experience a gradual reduction in kidney Qi, essence, and blood, thereby lead to disturbances in supporting and promoting the organ systems.

TCM treatment for menopausal symptoms requires identifying holistic disruptions in physiological patterns and applying various TCM treatments, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, auricular acupuncture, and moxibustion.

Additionally, these treatments can be combined with other pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical therapies, such as massage and nutrition counseling. It is essential to embrace the delicate mental and physical changes that come with age.

TCM can help women to minimize their problems in the transition from a reproductive to a non-reproductive age. It is also crucial for women to regularly take good care of themselves with a holistic lifestyle and a healthy diet.

Sports drinks are a big business, but they serve a different need than electrolyte solutions for diarrhea treatment. So it’s important to know one type from electrolyte drinks from the other.

In normal circumstances, drinking 8 glasses of water a day will be enough to get you through your daily routine. However, some activities or physical conditions can lead to more fluid loss than others — excessive and/or prolonged exercise, severe vomiting or diarrhea, for example.

In these cases, your normal water intake won’t be enough because your body loses electrolytes in addition to water.

An excessive loss of body fluids could lead to severe dehydration, a potentially life-threatening condition. If you engage in an activity that causes more dehydration than usual, you may experience fatigue, dry mouth, reduced urination and even irregular heartbeats (heart arrhythmias). In such a case, drinking an electrolyte drink will be beneficial.

It is not recommended to substitute one type of electrolyte drink for the other. Given that diarrhea and vomiting both cause severe and acute losses of fluid and electrolytes, the body needs to be replenished immediately. A workout, on the other hand, mainly causes a loss of water and sugar and a minimal loss of electrolytes.

Taking ORT while having diarrhea is not advised because its high sugar content would draw more water into the digestive tract, causing intestinal constriction and worsening the diarrhea.

Please note these important points:

  • People with a heart condition and/or kidney disease should consult their doctor before trying any electrolyte drink, as it may contain ingredients that could complicate their condition.
  • Never mix an electrolyte drink with anything but water — not syrup, soft drink, milk, or even fruit juice — because doing so could affect the proportion of electrolytes in the drink.
  • People suffering from severe diarrhea should avoid electrolyte drinks because drinking them could lead to severe dehydration.

Turmeric is widely used in supplements nowadays. Its root originates from the Curcuma Longa plant (ginger) usually found in Southeast Asia. The best turmeric supplements have a combination of curcumin and black pepper to maximize efficacy.

Here are 10 of its health benefits:

  1. ARTHRITIS & JOINT PAIN – The most common use for turmeric extract is combating joint pain and arthritis. Curcumin slows down inflammation linked to rheumatoid and arthritis. Turmeric reduces arthritis symptoms and serves as a balanced treatment for joint pain.

  1. CHRONIC INFLAMMATION – Inflammation is the body’s immune system responding to irritants. When inflammation becomes chronic, it can lead to serious health problems. Curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties help relief key inflammatory markers in the body.
  1. WEIGHT LOSS – Obesity can lead to several types of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Several trials have shown that curcumin stabilise metabolism and managing weight. Turmeric increases insulin sensitivity and regulates lipid.
  1. SKIN HEALTH – Our skin is the outermost protective layer of our body. It keeps us safe from harmful microbes. At times, unwanted skin conditions arise that require treatment for chronic acne (pimples), eczema and psoriasis. Turmeric enhances collagen synthesis and speeds up tissue repair.

  1. NATURAL BLOOD THINNER – Curcumin can act as an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) under certain conditions. Turmeric extract impacts several stages of the coagulation process, including thrombosis (blood clotting) and hemostasis (stopping blood flow).
  1. DISEASES & CHRONIC CONDITIONS – Turmeric has significant antioxidant properties and curcumin has shown ability to boost immune system and protect against disease by directly slowing down cell damage and oxidative stress.
  1. ENHANCES BRAIN FUNCTION – Research shows curcumin enhances DHA synthesis, crucial for brain health. Antioxidant improves cognition and increase neuroplasticity. Curcumin have an antidepressant and anxiolytic, the ability to modulate levels of anxiety. It’s a good treatment for depression.

  1. ALLERGIES & ASTHMA – Allergy transpires when the immune system mistakenly identifies foreign substances harmful to the body. During an allergic reaction, we produce antibodies that respond to these allergens. The anti-inflammatory activity of turmeric can fight off many allergy-related symptoms and decrease the probability of asthma attacks.
  1. LIVER DETOXIFICATION – Liver detoxification is the removal of toxins from the blood and the metabolising of nutrients to ensure our body gets what it needs. During detox, turmeric properties help speed up the metabolising process.

  1. HEADACHES & MIGRAINES – The immense pain and discomfort of headaches and migraines can arise from stress, fatigue, neck tension, etc. Curcumin have shown its potential in treating headaches and migraines through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric can reduce pain from inflammation and inhibits oxidative stress in the body.

Turmeric curcumin is good for ‘almost everything’. It’s not a cure for diseases, but its medicinal properties have shown major health benefits.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs on either side of your spine. They are located at the back behind your belly and below your ribs. One of our kidneys’ vital functions is to control the sodium balance in our body.

But if our salt intake is too high and the kidneys cannot remove enough of it, this results in high level of sodium in the blood (hypernatremia). This causes the body to store more water, increasing the fluid level in the vessels. Kidneys must then work harder to remove sodium, excess fluid and other wastes from the body. This leads to higher blood pressure in the kidney system that also causes higher pressure in the capillaries of the kidney tissue.

As blood pressure increases, it causes the leaking of protein into the urine, triggering kidney failure. So eating food with high sodium content increases your risk of getting kidney diseases.

Other factors can also cause kidney diseases, such as:

  • Eating food with strong flavours. Foods that are very sweet increase the sugar level in our bloodstream that causes kidneys have to work harder.
  • Not exercising enough. This common lack can lead to many chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.

These health conditions would also cause the kidneys to work harder, leading to increased risk of kidney failure.

  • Drinking too little water. As the kidneys filter waste out of our body and expel it as urine, it requires water as a medium in the filtration to turn water and other waste substances to urine. If we drink too little water, kidneys may not be able to filter all waste substances, causing that waste to accumulate. If that happens for too long, it will turn into an excess of crystal/ stone-forming substances that become painful kidney stones. If you have the following symptoms, it is suggested that you take a test to measure your kidney function.
  • Swollen feet and legs, feeling easily or more tired, and have less energy
  • Having back pain, especially below the rib cage that may radiate to other areas, such as the abdomen.
  • Abnormalities of urine, such as having blood or foamy or excessive bubbles in urine, or an increased need to urinate particularly at night. Our kidneys are organs that work continuously without pause. We can help take care of them by avoiding lifestyle behaviours that would increase the risk of kidney damage. For our kidneys, there is no way to turn back the clock so care well for them now while you can.

The Greeks used olive oil to protect their skin against the sun.  The Egyptians used pastes of rice and jasmine. Sunscreen has come a long way since then, but its evolution hasn’t been without controversy.

The first sun tan lotion was developed around 1938 by a Swiss chemistry student named Fran Greiter, who got sunburned as he climbed Mount Piz Buin in the Alps. Then in 1944, pharmacist Benjamin Green, who was serving as an airman in World War II, used red veterinary petrolatum as a physical barrier to prevent ultraviolet rays from hitting his skin.

Sunscreens have come a long way since then, and in recent years the average consumer has been constantly bombarded with different and conflicting information about them. You might read from one source that the higher the SF number, the better protection you’ll get, then saw somewhere else that high SF isn’t really that useful. And in the last few years there’s been a growing concern that sunscreens contain all kinds of chemicals that harm coral reefs. If all this leaves you confused, we are here to help.

Here are some of your sunscreen questions, answered:

Is higher SPF better?
You’ve probably heard that sunscreens with an SPF over 50 only provide a negligible increase in protection. This is mostly true, because SPF 50 already blocks 98 percent of UVB radiation. Going over 50 can only give you another percent or so of protection. But this idea is based on principle, not on actual experiments. The only randomised, double-blinded study that has been conducted on SPF efficacy in preventing sunburn found that SPF 100 did prevent burns more effectively than SPF 50.

Are spray-on sunscreens better or worse?
Sprayed sunscreen often ends up in the wind, and more could end up on the sand than on your skin. Even discounting the possibility that inhaling the mist could be bad for your lungs, it’s worth remembering that a fine mist is less likely to provide adequate coverage than a lotion or cream.

Can I just take a sunscreen pill?
No. In 2018 the US Food Drug Administration sent warning letters to three manufacturers of supplements claiming to protect you from radiation, telling them to stop falsely advertising the benefits of their pills. The USFDA noted that there’s no pill or capsule that can replace your sunscreen and to instead opt for one of the traditional forms available in the market.

No to sunscreen pills.

Which ingredients harm coral reefs?
In recent years there’s been an increasing awareness of how much our sunscreen can potentially harm coral reefs. Research shows that oxybenone, a common chemical in sunscreen, along with a few others, quickly bleach the coral and damage its DNA, and it only takes a single drop in 4.3 million gallons of water to do the damage.

In an effort to protect coral reefs, the US state of Hawaii has banned oxybenone altogether. And not swimming in the ocean doesn’t help you avoid the problem entirely, because when you get home, you’ll wash that sunscreen down the drain and it can still end up in the ocean all the same.
